GORMAN AND GENEVESE NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMS

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior tennis players Dan Gorman (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and Jennifer Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District II College Division Men's and Women's At-Large First Teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

By making the All-District First Team, Gorman and Genevese are now forwarded onto the national ballot to try for Verizon Academic All-American® accolades, which will be announced on Tuesday, June 11th for men and Thursday, June 13th for women.

To be eligible for Verizon Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. The College Division is made up of all the NCAA Division II and III Schools in the nation as well as all NAIA schools. Student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools are named to the University Division Teams. District II is made up of schools from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The At-Large program honors student-athletes in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo for men and women, crew and field hockey for women and volleyball and wrestling for men.

This year marks the 50th year of the Academic All-America program, as the inaugural team was announced on December 6, 1952. Since that time, more than 12,000 students have been named Academic All-America team members at colleges and universities at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport. The 22 members of the original team, which included football players only, will be honored with a series of events throughout the current academic year. The program's popularity resulted in a significant expansion for the current academic year, as 816 student-athletes --- a 19 percent increase over the previous highest number -- will be selected to 12 different Academic All-America teams during the 2001-02 academic season.

Gorman helped the men's tennis team to the squad's second straight Middle Atlantic Conference Playoff appearance this season and an overall record of 11-7. Gorman played sixth singles and third doubles for Moravian this spring and posted records of 10-6 in singles action and 10-8 in doubles play with partner Todd Edwards. Gorman is a two-time member of the MAC All-Academic Team.

Genevese led the women's tennis team to its second straight MAC title and the squad's fifth title in the last six years. Moravian posted a perfect 16-0 record last fall led by Genevese, who played second singles and first doubles. Genevese had a undefeated singles record of 13-0 and she was 15-2 in doubles action and won the 2001 MAC Doubles Championship with partner Corinne Kleinsmith. Genevese, who needs just 12 wins during her senior year to reach 50 for her career, was named to the MAC Commonwealth All-Star Team last fall and she is a two-time MAC All-Academic honoree.

The duo, along with five other seniors, have led Moravian to a record of 121-46 over the last four years with three Commonwealth Conference Championships and four trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Gorman and Genevese will now try to become the 23rd and 24th Verizon Academic All-Americans in Moravian history and the 18th and 19th in the last nine years.
