In addition to the spring sport honorees, the NCAA also awards 116 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in fall and winter sports in which the NCAA conducts championships, for a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships annually.

In addition, the student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution, and intercollegiate athletics.

Shertzer, who graduated with a 3.69 GPA as a biology major, led the Moravian women's outdoor track & field team to its 10th straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship this spring.  She also helped the squad tie for ninth place at the NCAA Division III National Championships.  Individually, Shertzer earned All-American accolades for the second time in her track & field career with a seventh place finish in the inaugural 3,000-meter steeplechase this year.  She also won the MAC titles in the steeplechase and 10,000 meters.

Shertzer has been invited to San Antonio, Texas to train with the United States Olympic Pentathlon team, which she hopes to become a member of and compete in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.  The pentathlon consists of cross country running, swimming, horseback riding, shooting and fencing.  Shertzer has competed in all the events except fencing.

Eight of the women's 29 winners are from the NCAA Division III level and Shertzer is the only selections from the MAC, male or female.

Shertzer is the second Moravian female to win the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this year and the third woman overall.  Moravian's other winners include Heidi Wolfsberger earlier in 2002 after the cross country season, Sharon Duffy in 1990, Daniel Joseph in 1973 and Jud Frank in 1994.
