FOUR NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Jennifer Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) from
the women’s tennis team, junior Erica Napoli (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson West
Lawn HS) from the women’s soccer team, junior Kim Zipf (Wyomissing,
PA/Holy Name HS) of the women’s volleyball squad and sophomore Jed
Warsager (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) from the football team have been named the Moravian
College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Genevese, Moravian’s top singles and doubles player, posted a
3-0 record in both singles and doubles action for the Greyhounds last week. Genevese earned
two wins each in victories over Albright College, 9-0, Drew University, 8-1, and Franklin & Marshall
College, 5-4. Genevese heads into Moravian’s next match, a home
contest with Widener University on Monday, October 7th needing just two singles victories
to reach 50 in her career. The Greyhounds currently are 11-0 on the season and have won
34 straight matches. The team will host a Middle Atlantic Conference Semifinal on Wednesday,
October 9th at 2:00 p.m. against an opponent still to be determined.
Napoli, a midfielder, scored the first goal in both of Moravian’s
matches last week as the Greyhounds posted a 2-0 record for the week. Napoli had
the game-winning goal in the 21st minute of a 2-0 shutout of Delaware Valley College and
she gave Moravian a 1-0 lead in the third minute of a 2-1 victory over Lebanon Valley College
in Commonwealth Conference action. The goals were Napoli’s first
two of the season. Moravian is currently 8-3-1 on the season and returns to action on Wednesday,
October 9th in a non-conference home match with Drew University beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Zipf, an outside hitter, paced the Greyhounds to a 2-1 record last week
including a 3-0 victory over Eastern University, which was ranked 25th in the nation last
week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Greyhounds also defeated Rutgers-Newark,
3-0, but fell to Commonwealth Conference rival Juniata College, 3-0. Zipf’s best
individual match last week was in the victory over Eastern when she had 13 kills, 15 digs
and four service aces. For the week, Zipf average 3.38 kills and 4.50
digs per game while contributing five service aces. The Greyhounds are 12-5 on the year
and will host Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday, October 9th in a Commonwealth Conference
match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Warsager, a wide receiver and return specialist, returned the opening
kick 98 yards for a touchdown and the Moravian College football team never looked back
in a 41-21 victory over Lebanon Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference action last
Saturday. Warsager’s return took just 16 seconds and was a Moravian
record for a kick off return. The return broke Ralph Eltringham’s record
of 95 yards set on October 2, 1965 at Wilkes. Warsager finished the game
with 175 yards on three kickoff returns. The Greyhounds are now 2-2 on the season and will
host Juniata College in a MAC game at Steel Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October
12th.
