FIVE GREYHOUNDS NAMED STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Jackie Buschta (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic
HS) from the women’s soccer team, junior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/Avon
HS) of the women’s tennis squad, junior Kim Zipf (Wyomissing,
PA/Holy Name HS) from the women’s volleyball team and seniors Charlie
Bowden (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial HS) and Jarrod Pence (Livingston,
NJ/Livingston HS) of the football team have been named the Moravian College
Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Buschta, a midfielder, scored a pair of goals to lead Moravian to a
2-1 victory over Drew University in the Greyhounds only match last week. Both of Buschta’s goals
came in the first half in a span of five minutes to build a 2-0 lead. Buschta leads
Moravian in scoring this season with six goals and three assists for 15 points after missing
her entire sophomore year with a knee injury. She led the team in scoring as a freshman.
The Greyhounds, who are9-3-1 on the season, had their other match scheduled for last week
postponed until Tuesday, October 15th when they will travel to Elizabethtown College for
a 4:00 p.m. match.
Berry posted two singles victories and a doubles win to help guide the
Greyhounds to their ninth straight appearance in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship
match. Berry had a straight sets singles win in a 9-0 victory over Widener
University and she earned another straight sets triumph and a doubles victory versus Lycoming
College in an MAC Semifinal. The Greyhounds, who are 13-0 this season and have won 36 straight
matches, host Messiah College in the MAC title match on Monday, October 14th at 1:00 p.m.
Zipf, an outside hitter, paced the Greyhounds to a 2-1 record last week
including a 3-0 victory over Lebanon Valley College in Commonwealth Conference action.
In the three match, Zipf averaged 3.92 kills and 6.0 digs per game and
she had a .217 hitting percentage. Zipf had 16 kills and 21 digs in Moravian’s
win over the Flying Dutchmen. She added 15 kills, 28 digs and three blocks in a 3-1 loss
at Whittier (CA) College and 16 kills and 23 digs in a 3-2 victory over Chapman (CA) University.
Moravian is 14-6 on the season and returns to action on Wednesday, October 16th in a Commonwealth
Conference match at Elizabethtown College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Bowden, Moravian’s quarterback, completed 12 of 20 passes for
113 yards with three touchdowns and just one interception as the Greyhounds defeated Juniata
College, 39-23, in Middle Atlantic Conference action. Bowden also ran
the ball five times for 21 yards including a on-yard touchdown run that enable the Greyhounds
to take a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Pence, a defensive back, made eight tackles and a key interception to
lead Moravian to the victory over Juniata. With Moravian leading 26-23, Pence stepped
in front of a sure touchdown pass that would have given the Eagles the lead and made his
second interception of the season. He returned the ball 23 yards and set-up a drive that
would lead to a Moravian touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Pence also
had three pass break-ups in the game and half a tackle for loss. The Greyhounds are 3-2
on the season and will travel to Delaware Valley College for a MAC game on Saturday, October
19th at 1:00 p.m.
