TRIO OF GREYHOUNDS NAMED STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Kim Zipf (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) of the women’s volleyball team, junior John Panikiewsky (Carteret, NJ/Carteret HS) from the football squad and senior Ryan Sculley (Bethlehem, PA/Northampton HS) of the men’s soccer team have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Zipf, an outside hitter, led the Greyhounds to a 1-1 record last week including the squad’s seventh straight appearance in the Commonwealth Conference Championship match. Zipf had 26 kills, 17 digs, two service aces, a block and a .362 hitting percentage in a 3-2 victory over Messiah College in a Commonwealth Conference Semifinal match. She added 11 kills, ten digs and a .444 hitting percentage in a 3-0 loss to Juniata College in the championship match. Moravian is 25-9 on the season and has been awarded the top seed in the upcoming Eastern College Athletic Conference South Championships. The Greyhounds will have a first round bye before competing in the semifinals in the tournament to be hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.

Panikiewsky, a defensive back, helped the Moravian defense allow just six points and 287 yards of offense in a 23-6 victory over Susquehanna University in the Greyhounds final MAC game of the season. Panikiewsky had five tackles with one sack for a loss of ten yards and an interception, which he returned 27 yards to end the Crusaders first scoring threat of the game in the second quarter. Panikiewsky’s sack came on the final play of the first quarter and the interception was on the first play of the second quarter. Moravian, now 7-2 on the season, has a six-game winning streak, its longest since a seven-game stretch that overlapped the 1995 & 1996 seasons, and the squad has clinched a .500 season, the 13th in head coach Scot Dapp’s 16-year career. Coach Dapp earned the 100th victory of his career on Saturday. The Greyhounds will return to action in their final regular season game on Saturday, November 16th when the squad hosts rival Muhlenberg College for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Steel Field.

Sculley, a goalie, helped Moravian reach the Commonwealth Conference Championship match for the first time since 1991 with a 2-0-shutout victory over top-seeded Elizabethtown College in the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals. Sculley had six saves in the shutout, his second of the season and the fifth of his career. In the title match against nationally ranked Messiah College, Sculley had eight saves for the fourth seeded Greyhounds but the second seeded Falcons, one of the top scoring teams in the nation, got the ball past him six times for a 6-0 victory. Moravian, now 11-8-2 on the year, will return to action on Wednesday, November 13th when the squad hosts Widener University in an ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship First Round match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
