TRIO NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Bill Engler (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) from
the football team, sophomore Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) of
the men’s cross country squad and sophomore Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee
HS) from the women’s cross country team have been named the Moravian College
Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Engler, a linebacker, made 13 tackles including seven solo stops in
Moravian’s 8-0 non-conference loss to rival Muhlenberg College. Engler was
voted as Moravian’s Player of the Game after the contest by the media and he helped
the Greyhound defense allow just one touchdown for the fourth straight game. Moravian gave
up 207 yards of total offense in the contest and had its six-game winning streak snapped
with the loss. The Greyhounds, now 7-3 on the season, will travel to McDaniel College to
play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southeast Championship Game on Saturday,
November 23rd at 12:00 p.m. The ECAC berth is the first in Moravian history.
Grogan earned NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region Honors and helped
the Greyhound men’s cross country squad place 17th of 34 schools at the regional
meet hosted by Salisbury (MD) University. Grogan placed 28th in the 241-competitor
race with a time of 25:44 on the 8,000-meter course. The top 35 runners in the race earn
All-Region accolades.
McGarvie also earned NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region honors and
she placed high enough to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships. McGarvie finished
in sixth place in the field of 237 runners in a time of 21:36 on the 6,000-meter course.
For the first time since 1992, the Moravian women’s cross country had its team season
end at the Mideast Regional as the Greyhounds placed fifth of 34 schools. Only the top
two teams in the region advance to the National Championships this weekend at St. Olaf
College in Northfield, Minnesota, a race Moravian had run in each of the last nine years
as a team. McGarvie will be making her second trip to the NCAA Championships.
She placed 152nd last fall in her freshman debut.
