FOUR ‘HOUNDS NAMED STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) of the
women’s basketball team, sophomore Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee
HS) from the women’s cross country squad, freshman Ben Hawkins (Belmar,
NJ/Manasquan HS) of the football team and sophomore Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown,
NJ/Hackettstown HS) from the men’s basketball squad have been named the
Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Hughes, a guard, helped the Greyhounds to a 1-1 record, a second place
finish in the Emmanuel College Tap-Off Tournament and she was named to the All-Tournament
Team for her efforts. Hughes scored a team high 16 points and she added
seven rebounds in Moravian’s 78-63 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic University in
the first round. Hughes netted a game high 22 points in the Greyhound’s
83-75 overtime loss to nationally ranked Emmanuel College in the championship game. For
the tournament, Hughes shot 40 percent (12 of 30) from the floor, 50 percent
behind the three-point line (7 of 14) and 70 percent at the charity stripe (7 of 10). The
Greyhounds return to action on Tuesday, November 26th in a non-conference game at local
rival DeSales University beginning at 7:00 p.m.
McGarvie placed 69th of 215 runners at the 2002 NCAA Division III National
Championships hosted by St. Olaf College last Saturday in Northfield, Minnesota. McGarvie had
a time of 22:58 on the 6,000-meter course and she finished 83 spots higher than last year
when she was 152nd as a freshman.
Hawkins, a wide receiver, had the best receiving game of his debut season
at Moravian, catching five passes for 105 yards in Moravian’s 21-7 loss to McDaniel
College in the 2002 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southeast Championship game. Hawkins had
38-yard and a 37-yard catches during the game and he also ran twice for 11 yards. Moravian
finished the season with a 7-4 overall record as the team made its first-ever appearance
in the ECAC Championships.
Zaleski, a forward, led the Greyhounds to a 2-0 record, the championship
of the Emmanuel College Tap-Off Tournament and he was named the tournament’s Most
Valuable Player after recording double-doubles in both contests. Zaleski,
who was named to the Middle Atlantic Corporation’s Weekly Honor Roll for his efforts,
opened the season with 29 points and a career best 12 rebounds in Moravian’s 76-65
victory over host Emmanuel. He added 12 points and ten rebounds in a 69-60 win over Palm
Beach Atlantic University in the championship game. For the tournament, Zaleski shot
58.1 percent (18 of 31) from the floor and 80 percent (four of five) at the free throw
line. Moravian will return to action on Tuesday, November 26th in their team’s home
opener with local rival DeSales University beginning at 8:00 p.m.
