HUGHES & MCLEAN NAMED TO COMMONWEALTH ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS;
Golden Honored as Commonwealth Rookie of the Year
ANNVILLE, PA --- Junior guard Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) of
the Moravian College women’s basketball team has been named to the 2003 Commonwealth
All-Conference First Team and senior forward Kelly McLean (Allentown, PA/Salisbury
HS) earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team announced Wednesday while
freshman guard Catherine Golden (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) was named the
Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year.
Joining Hughes on the All-Conference First Team were Christina Vouriotis
and Amie Krezting of Messiah College, Stephanie Tighe from Lebanon Valley College and Alison
Ream of Susquehanna University. Vouriotis was named the Commonwealth Player of the Year
while Messiah head coach Mike Miller was honored as the Commonwealth Coach of the Year.
Joining McLean on the second team were Jennifer Northcott of Lebanon Valley,
Nicole Stanley and Nikki Carden from Widener University, Jen LaCount of Juniata College
and Anne Dougherty from Albright College.
Hughes, McLean and Golden have helped
the Greyhounds post a 20-7 overall record and a return to the postseason for the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Championships since the 1993-94 season. Moravian fell to Messiah,
73-52 in the Commonwealth Conference Championship game, and the Greyhounds will host in
the 2003 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championships on Saturday, March
8th and Sunday, March 9th as the top seed. Moravian will be making its seventh appearance
in the ECAC Tournament, and the Greyhounds have won 20 games for the first time since 1993-94.
Hughes leads the Greyhounds in scoring this season with an average of
13.0 points per game, which ranks fourth in the Commonwealth Conference. Hughes also
leads the squad with 54 three-pointers, and she has added 67 rebounds, 49 assists and 49
steals, which ranks eighth in the conference. Hughes is ranked in the
top ten nationally and first in the conference in three-point field goal percentage at
45 percent (54 of 120), and she is shooting 38.8 percent (106 of 273) from the floor and
77.3 percent (58 of 75) at the foul line, which is sixth in the conference. Hughes enters
the ECAC Tournament needing 61 points to become the 15th Moravian player to score 1,000
points in a career.
McLean leads the Greyhounds on the boards at 6.0 rebounds per contest,
which ranks tenth in the conference, and she is netting 8.8 points per game, which is 20th
in the Commonwealth. McLean, who leads the team with 20 blocked shots,
which is seventh in the conference, is currently eighth all-time at Moravian with 1,150
points. McLean, who has contributed 19 assists and 21 steals this winter,
is currently fourth in school history in career rebounds with 710. McLean is
fourth in the Commonwealth in field goal percentage at 44.0 percent (74 of 168), and she
is tenth in free throw percentage at 69.6 percent (55 of 79).
Golden is averaging 7.9 points per game in her debut season, and she
added 42 rebounds, 18 steals, 20 assists and 12 three-pointers. Golden is
25th in the Commonwealth in scoring, and she leads the conference in free throw percentage
at 92.5 percent (49 of 53).
