GREYHOUNDS SENDING THREE STUDENT-ATHLETES TO NCAA DIVISION III INDOOR
TRACK & FIELD NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College will have three student-athletes, two females and one male, representing the school in four events at the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships to be hosted by DePauw University on Friday, March 14th and Saturday, March 15th at DePauw’s Indoor Tennis and Track Center in Greencastle, Indiana.

Sophomore Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) and junior Christina Scherwin (Denmark) will represent the Moravian women’s team while junior Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) will represent the men’s squad.

Rotzell, who won the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor titles in the long jump and triple jump with MAC record jumps, will compete in the same events at the national championships. Rotzell is ranked eighth in the long jump at 5.67 meters (18 feet, 7 ¼ inches) entering the meet, and she is 13th in the triple jump at 11.52 meters (37 feet, 9 ½ inches). Rotzell is slated to compete in the long jump at 11:30 a.m. on Friday and in the triple jump at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Scherwin, who is the defending NCAA Division III National Champion in the javelin, won her second straight MAC title in the shot put with a record toss of 13.70 meters (44 feet, 11 ½ inches), which ranks her eighth heading into the national championships. Scherwin will compete at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Moore, who was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the MAC Championships after winning three MAC titles, the long jump, the 200-meter dash and the 55-meter dash, enters the national championship ranked first in the long jump. Moore is the only automatic qualifier in the event and his distance of 7.38 meters (24 feet, 2 ½ inches) is the only jump in Moravian indoor history to exceed 24 feet. Moore is slated to compete at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Since reinstating its track & field programs back in the 1980s, Moravian has sent nearly 150 student-athletes to the NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. The Greyhounds have had over 60 All-Americans, and six of Moravian’s seven individual national champions are from the track & field program. Moravian’s women’s team has won eight straight MAC indoor titles and 11 overall, and the squad has won ten consecutive outdoor championships while the men’s team has three indoor and three outdoor MAC titles.
