25 MORAVIAN WINTER STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College winter athletic teams had 25 members named to the 2002-2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Winter-All-Academic Team with at least two members from each of Moravian’s four winter sports and led by 12 honorees from the women’s track and field team.

To be eligible for the MAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve, a sophomore, junior or senior and maintain a 3.2 grade-point average.

In addition to the 12 selections from the women’s track and field team, the women’s basketball team had six student-athletes honored, while the men’s track and field team had five members. The men’s basketball team had a pair of student-athletes honored.

Leading the women’s indoor track and field team was junior Christina Scherwin (Denmark), the defending NCAA Division III Champion in the javelin. Scherwin earned All-American honors for the second time in her career, finishing fourth in the shot put with a toss of 14.45 meters (47 feet, 5 inches) at the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championships hosted by DePauw University. Scherwin also captured the MAC shot put title for the second straight year, earning her First Team All-Conference accolades, while breaking the MAC record with a throw of 13.70 meters (44 feet, 11 ½ inches). Scherwin was the runner-up in the high jump at 1.52 meters (five feet) and the weight throw at 12.30 meters (40 feet, 4 1/4 inches), and Scherwin was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.27 meters (17 feet, 3 1/2 inches). She earned First Team All-Conference honors for all her top three finishes.

Sophomore Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was a First Team All-Conference selection after winning the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 13.08 meters (42 feet, 11 inches). Senior Amanda Wynn (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) finished sixth in the pole vault, clearing 2.89 meters (9 feet, 6 inches) earning a spot on the All-Conference Second Team .

Sophomore Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) earned All-Conference Second Team honors with a second place finish at the MAC Championships in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:54.19. Sophomore Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) was sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:46.09 earning her Second Team All-Conference honors, while classmate Alison Stoyko (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) finished tenth in 20:23.08. Sophomore Lindsay Stehman (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown HS) placed 12th in the 1,500 meter with a time of 5:23.77. Sophomore Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) finished ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:32.86.

Also earning spots on the MAC All-Academic Team are junior Nicole Sabaliauskas (Butler, NJ/Butler HS), who finished 12th at the MAC Championships in the long jump at 4.63 meters (15 feet, 2 ¼ inches) and eight in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.70 seconds, and juniors Jennifer Brief (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson HS) and Angie Morgan (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS). Senior Jennifer Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS) also earned MAC All-Academic Team honors.

The Moravian women’s basketball team posted a 20-8 record and finished second in the Commonwealth Championships. It was their first 20-win season since the 1993-1994 season and the team competed in both the Commonwealth Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference postseason tournaments.

Leading the Greyhounds was junior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St Rose HS). Hughes was a member of the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team and led the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game. She also contributed 69 rebounds, 50 assists, and 50 steals. Senior Kelly McLean (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) was a member of the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team. She led the team in rebounds with 5.8 per contest and added 8.5 points per outing, 21 steals, and 19 assists.

Seniors Tara Wozniak (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional HS) and Kristen Sarnocinski (Harleysville, PA/Germantown Academy HS) also earned spots on the MAC All-Academic Team. Wozniak contributed 9.4 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per contest, 53 steals, and 44 assists, while Sarnocinski added 7.7 points per outing, 4.1 rebounds a game, 51 assists, and 27 steals for the Greyhounds. Moravian's final honorees were juniors Tracie Shipman (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan HS), who added 6.3 points per contest, 4.4 rebounds per game, 48 steals, and 29 assists, and Jen Ellard (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills HS), who had 12 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) leads the men’s indoor track & field honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team. Silvoy won the gold medal in the 400-meter dash at the MAC Indoor Championships in 50.05 seconds, and he was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.06 seconds, two earn First Team All-Conference honors in both events. Silvoy and senior Eric Paul (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) were part of the 4x200-meter relay team that was third in a time of 1:33.28 seconds to earn First Team All-Conference accolades. Paul also ran on the 4x400-meter relay team, and he placed 12th in the high jump.

Junior John Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) was third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.44 meters (47 feet, 4 1/2 inches) to earn First Team All-Conference. Lesoine also earned Second Team All-Conference accolades with a sixth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.11 meters (43 feet, 1/4 inches). Moravian’s other MAC All-Academic honorees were junior thrower Scott Williams (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) and sophomore distance runner Anthony Bisti (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Heights HS).

The Moravian men’s basketball team earned its first postseason berth since the 1996-1997 season as the team posted a 16-11 overall record. The Greyhounds also participated in the ECAC Quarterfinals for the first time since 1984. Junior Lucas Malishchak (Wanamie, PA/Nanticoke HS) led the Greyhounds offense with a team high 107 assists, to go along with 91 points, 64 rebounds, and 40 steals. Senior Willie Reynolds (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) contributed 5.4 points, 59 rebounds, 52 assists, and 18 steals.
