QUARTET HONORED AS MORAVIAN ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Christina Scherwin (Denmark) from the women’s
outdoor track & field team, junior Donna Weiner (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park
HS) of the softball squad, freshman Dustin McCormick (East Stroudsburg,
PA/East Stroudsburg HS) from the golf team and junior Joe Moore (Andover,
NJ/Newton HS) of the men’s outdoor track & field squad have been named
the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Scherwin won the shot put and placed seventh in the discus as Moravian's
only competitor at the Widener University Invitational last weekend. Scherwin captured
first place in the shot put with a toss of 14.58 meters (47 feet, ten inches), which broke
her own school record set last weekend. The distance also automatically qualified Scherwin for
the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championships in the event. She had a distance of 35.06
meters (115 feet, 1/2 inch) in the discus. This was the first time in 2003 that Scherwin had
competed in the discus. Scherwin will be competing at the 2003 Penn Relays
on Thursday, April 24th as she tries to defend her title in the javelin.
Weiner, a pitcher, tossed a pair of victories and did not allow an earned
run as Moravian posted a 3-1 Commonwealth Conference record last week. Weiner began
the week with a five-hit shutout of Messiah College. She added two strikeouts in the 8-0
victory. Weiner also allowed just five hits in a 3-1 victory at Susquehanna
University. She also gave up an unearned run and two walks while striking out four batters.
The two victories improved Weiner’s season record to 11-3 and lowered
her ERA to 1.34. Moravian is 21-7 overall and 6-2 in the Commonwealth Conference, and the
Greyhounds will return to action on Tuesday, April 22nd in a Commonwealth doubleheader
at Lebanon Valley College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
McCormick averaged 76.0 strokes per round last week for the Greyhounds.
He fired a 75 at the Lebanon Country Club to earn medallist honors and help Moravian finish
second in the Lebanon Valley College Invitational. McCormick fired a round
of 77 on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club as Moravian finished third in the
Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational. McCormick finished the week with
a round of 76 on the Weyhill Course at Saucon Valley as the Greyhounds defeated DeSales
University and Ursinus College in a tri-match. Moravian, which is 3-2 on the season, returns
to action at the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April
21st and 22nd in Moosic, Pennsylvania.
Moore, a sprinter and jumper, was part of two school records to lead
Moravian at the Leopard Invitational hosted by Lafayette College last Saturday. Moore finished
second in the 200-meter dash in school record time of 21.70 seconds, which provisionally
qualified him for the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championships in the event. Moore was
part of the 4x100 meter relay team that placed second in a school record and NCAA provisional
qualifying time of 41.91 seconds. Moore will be competing in the 2003
Penn Relays on Friday, April 25th in the long jump.
