THREE GREYHOUNDS EARN LVAIAW HONORS
ALLENTOWN, PA --- Moravian College senior Jennifer Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall
HS), junior Christina Scherwin (Copenhagen, Denmark) and sophomore Heather
Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) have been named the Lehigh Valley Association
of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Player of the Year in their respective sports.
The trio was honored at the annual LVAIAW Banquet hosted by Muhlenberg College Thursday. Genevese was
named the tennis Player of the Year while Scherwin won the award for field. Bortz earned
her honor on the softball field.
Genevese played at first singles and first doubles for the Moravian
tennis team last fall and helped the team to its third straight MAC Championships and the
team’s sixth title in the last seven years. The Greyhounds posted a second consecutive
undefeated season at 15-0, the third undefeated campaign in the last five years. Genevese,
who finished her career with a 53-13 singles mark, won the 2001 MAC Doubles championship
with partner, Corinne Kleinsmith. Genevese was named
to the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team for the second straight year and she was
also named Moravian LVAIAW Outstanding Athlete Award winner.
Scherwin, who holds Denmark’s national record in the javelin and
shot put, heads into this weekend’s MAC Championships as the favorite in both events. Scherwin,
the defending NCAA Division III Champion in the javelin, has already set the Moravian records
in both events at 183 feet, eight inches in the javelin and 47 feet, ten inches in the
shot put. She won the 109th Penn Relays in the javelin with a throw of 177 feet, and Scherwin captured
first at the prestigious Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee with a throw
of 176 feet, one inch.
Bortz, a shortstop, is leading the Greyhound softball team at the plate
with a .472 batting average. Bortz has 51 hits on the season and became
the fastest player in school history to reach 100 career hits with a single in a victory
at Albright College on Monday. Bortz has also contributed 23 runs scored,
12 RBIs, ten stolen bases, nine walks and five doubles this spring. Moravian is the top
seed in the 2003 Commonwealth Conference tournament at Lebanon Valley College this weekend,
which begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 2nd.
