ESPOSITO, BREY & CIANFICHI NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMS
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior designated player Jessica Esposito (Madison, NJ/Madison
HS), junior third baseman Janelle Brey (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) and
sophomore outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS) have
been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District II College Division Softball Teams
selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Esposito was
a first team selection while Brey and Cianfichi were
second team honorees.
By making the All-District First Team, Esposito is now forwarded onto
the national ballot to try for Verizon Academic All-American® accolades, which will
be announced on Thursday, May 29th.
To be eligible for Verizon Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain
at least a 3.20 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter
or significant reserve.
The College Division is made up of all the NCAA Division II and III Schools in the nation
as well as all NAIA schools. Student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools are named to
the University Division Teams. District II is made up of schools from Delaware, the District
of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The Greyhounds have posted a 29-8 record this spring, the tenth consecutive season that
Moravian has won at least 23 games. The Greyhounds, which have won over 30 games four times
in the last nine years, won the Commonwealth Conference for the fourth consecutive year
and the conference tournament for the third straight season last weekend. Moravian, which
is in the postseason for the ninth consecutive year, has also been in the NCAA Tournament
the last six years, finishing third in the regional in 1999 and 2000.
Esposito has added 28 hits, 14 RBIs, ten runs, eight doubles, a triple,
a home run, five stolen bases and four walks.
Brey has continued to rewrite the Moravian record books this spring. Brey currently
holds the school records for home runs in a career (21), a season (10) and a game (2);
RBIs in a career (115), a season (52) and a game (seven) and doubles in a career (38),
a season (15) and a game (three). Brey is hitting .409 this season with
47 hits, 39 RBIs, 35 runs scored, 17 walks, 13 doubles, four triples and six home runs.
Cianfichi has a .319 batting average for the Greyhounds and she has
added 38 hits, 25 runs scored, seven RBIs, six walks, five stolen bases and three doubles
from the leadoff position.
Esposito will now try to become the 26th Verizon Academic All-Americans
in Moravian history and the 21st in the last ten years.
