MORAVIAN CAPTURES MATTE AWARD
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College continued its hold of the Matte Award, the all-sports
trophy given annually to the winner of the Moravian-Muhlenberg rivalry. The Greyhounds
have not lost the trophy since it was first awarded in 1988.
The Greyhounds posted a 9-8 record this season against the Mules, winning in women’s
volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s
basketball, women’s basketball, softball, golf and women’s track & field.
Muhlenberg captured field hockey, football, men’s cross country, baseball, women’s
lacrosse, women’s tennis, men’s tennis and men’s track & field.
The ‘Hounds have won the trophy outright 13 times: from 1989 to 1994; 1996 to 2000
and the last two years. Muhlenberg won the first award in 1987-88 and the schools tied
in 1994-95 and 2000-01.
The late Aaron Matte, a 1970 Muhlenberg graduate, donated the trophy to help promote
interest in the rivalry between the two NCAA Division III schools. The schools had the
annual luncheon to honor the award and the rivalry on Thursday on the Muhlenberg campus.
