SCHERWIN & ROTZELL TO COMPETE AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Christina Scherwin (Copenhagen, Denmark) and
sophomore Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) of the Moravian College
women’s outdoor track & field team will be competing in the 2003 NCAA Division
III Outdoor National Championships hosted by St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York
from Thursday, May 22nd until Saturday, May 24th.
Scherwin will be competing in the javelin and the shot put while Rotzell will
be participating in the triple jump. Each student-athlete will compete a preliminary flight
with the top nine distances moving onto the finals.
Scherwin will try to defend her title in the javelin on Friday, May
23rd at 10:30 a.m. She is seeded first of the 20 competitors in the event with a throw
of 53.95 meters (177 feet) this spring, and she is the second flight of the competition. Scherwin won
the 2002 NCAA Championship in the javelin with a meet record toss of 51.69 meters (169
feet, seven inches). On Saturday, May 24th, Scherwin will compete in the
second flight of the shot put at 11:30 a.m. Scherwin is seeded fourth
of 21 entrants with a toss of 14.58 meters (47 feet, ten inches), and she was fourth at
the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships to earn All-American honors.
Rotzell is seeded 16th of 20 competitors in the triple jump, and she
will be in the second preliminary flight competing at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd. Rotzell qualified
with a distance of 11.60 meters (38 feet, ¾ inches).
