GENEVESE & CASTAGNA NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMS

NEW WILMINGTON, PA --- Senior Jennifer Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) and junior Lauren Castagna (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) from the Moravian College women’s tennis team have been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District II College Division At-Large Teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Genevese was a first team selection while Castagna was a second team honoree.

By making the All-District First Team, Genevese is now forwarded onto the national ballot to try for Verizon Academic All-American® accolades, which will be announced on Thursday, June 12th. The At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo for men and women, crew and field hockey for women and volleyball and wrestling for men.

To be eligible for Verizon Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. The College Division is made up of all the NCAA Division II and III Schools in the nation as well as all NAIA schools. Student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools are named to the University Division Teams. District II is made up of schools from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The duo helped the Moravian women’s tennis team post its second straight undefeated season at 15-0, and win its third straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship. The Greyhounds also captured their sixth MAC title in seven years.

Genevese had a 15-5 singles record as Moravian's top player, and she was 12-2 in dual matches last fall. Genevese also posted a 14-2 mark as part of the Greyhounds' top doubles tandem. Genevese was a member of the Commonwealth All-Conference Team for the second straight year, and she was also on the MAC All-Academic Team for the third consecutive year. Genevese reached the semifinals of the 2002 MAC Individual Tournament as the number three seed, and she finished her career with a 53-13 singles record. This spring, Genevese was named the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tennis Player of the Year, Moravian’s LVAIAW Senior Outstanding Athlete and Moravian’s Blue & Grey Senior Scholar Athlete Award winner.

Castagna posted a 16-2 singles record as Moravian’s third player last fall, and she was 11-1 at third singles. Castagna has been a member of the MAC All-Academic team the last two years.

Genevese will now try to become the 26th Verizon Academic All-Americans in Moravian history and the 21st in the last ten years.
