SCHERWIN & WAGNER NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT SECOND TEAM
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College junior thrower Christina Scherwin (Copenhagen,
Denmark) and senior distance runner Jennifer Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson
HS) have been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District Women’s
Track & Field/Cross Country College Division Second Team selected by the College
Sports Information Directors of America.
To be eligible for Verizon Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain
at least a 3.20 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter
or significant reserve. The College Division is made up of all the NCAA Division II and
III schools in the nation as well as all NAIA schools. Student-athletes from NCAA Division
I schools are named to the University Division Teams. District II is made up of schools
from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The duo helped Moravian win its tenth straight Middle Atlantic Conference Cross Country
championship, its eighth consecutive MAC Indoor Track & Field title and its 11th straight
MAC Outdoor championship. Scherwin also scored all of Moravian’s points as the Greyhounds
tied for 31st at the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships and tied for
18th at the 2003 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships.
Scherwin won her second straight national championship in the javelin,
setting a meet and all-time NCAA Division III record with a toss of 55.34 meters (181 feet,
seven inches). Scherwin also placed fifth in the shot put at the outdoor
NCAA meet to earn All-American accolades with a distance of 13.67 meters (44 feet 10 ¼ inches).
At the 2003 NCAA indoor championships, Scherwin earned All-American honors
with a fourth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 14.45 meters (47 feet, five inches).
At the MAC meets, Scherwin captured the 2003 titles in the shot put both
indoors and outdoors as well as the javelin and discus outdoors.
Wagner earned All-Conference honors this past year on the track and
on the cross country course. Wagner was a First Team All-Conference runner
at the 2003 MAC Cross Country Championships with a fifth place finish, and she also earned
NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region accolades with a 21st place finish at the regional
meet. During last fall’s cross country season, Wagner won the Muhlenberg
College Invitational and placed in the top ten in six of the eight races she competed in. Wagner was
on the All-Conference Second Team in the outdoor track & field season with a sixth
place finish in the 10,000 meters.
