BORTZ, BREY, HENNESSY, WEINER & SOFTBALL TEAM RANKED IN NCAA STATISTICS
INDIANAPOLIS, IN --- Four members of the Moravian College softball team and the Greyhounds
are ranked in the top 40 in the nation in the final NCAA Division III statistics release
of the season released Thursday.
Sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) finished
the year sixth in the nation with a .496 batting average with 67 hits in 135 at-bats. Bortz was
also 36th in the country in toughest to strikeout, averaging one strikeout every 45 at-bats
(three strikeouts in 135 at-bats). Junior third baseman Janelle Brey (Allentown,
PA/Dieruff HS) finished the season ranked 28th in the nation in slugging percentage
at .763 (100 total bases in 131 at-bats).
On the mound, freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township
HS) was 20th in strikeouts per seven innings with an average of 7.6 (164 strikeouts
in 151 innings pitches). Hennessy and junior Donna Weiner (East
Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park HS) were both tied for 29th in the nation in victories
with 16 win each this spring. Hennessy posted a 16-6 record this season while Weiner
was 16-4 in the circle.
The Greyhound team was 29th in the country in earned run average with a team ERA of 1.45
(60 earned runs in 289 innings), and Moravian was ranked 30th in win-loss percentage at
.762 (32-10) and 29th in fielding percentage at .961 (867 putouts, 309 assists and 48 errors).
Moravian, which completed the season at 32-10 overall, finished as the runner-up in the
NCAA Division III Regional hosted by Ramapo College of New Jersey.
