FOUR NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Freshman Erica Angell (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill HS) from the women’s indoor track & field team, senior Kelly McLean (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) of the women’s basketball squad, senior Matt Bowers (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) from the men’s track & field team and sophomore Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) of the men’s basketball squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Angell won the mile run at the non-scoring Lafayette College Invitational to open the 2002-03 Moravian indoor track & field season. Angell’s winning time of 5:31.70 was ten seconds faster than her nearest competitor. The Greyhounds will be off for a month before returning to action on Friday and Saturday, January 10th and 11th at the Bucknell University Gulden Relays.

McLean, a forward, helped the Greyhounds to a 2-0 record last week in Commonwealth Conference action, including an upset win over #18 Lebanon Valley College. McLean netted 13 points and added seven rebounds in Moravian’s 88-58 victory over Albright College. She added a career high 23 points, ten rebounds and two blocks in the Greyhounds’ 98-94 overtime win at Lebanon Valley. With 3:09 remaining in overtime of that game, McLean hit a lay-up to become the 14th Moravian player and second this season to reach 1,000 career points. Her final basket in overtime gave the Greyhounds a 96-90 lead and sealed the upset victory. For the week, McLean was 14 of 22 from the floor (63.6 percent). Moravian is 3-2 overall this season and plays its final game before nearly a month off on Monday, December 9th when the Greyhounds host Drew University in a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m.

Bowers shattered his own school record in the 35-lb. weight throw as Moravian opened the 2002-03 indoor track & field season. Bowers placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.59 meters (47 feet, 10 ½ inches), which added four feet, seven inches to his existing school mark. The Moravian will be off for a month before returning to action on Friday and Saturday, January 10th and 11th at the Bucknell University Gulden Relays.

Zaleski, a forward, led the Greyhounds to a 2-0 record in the Commonwealth Conference last week. He scored a team high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Moravian’s 66-59 victory over Albright College. Zaleski netted 22 points in the Greyhounds’ 85-81 victory at Lebanon Valley College. For the week, Zaleski shot 55.6 percent from the floor (15 of 27) and he was a perfect 10-of-10 at the foul line while playing 34 minutes per game. Moravian is 4-1 overall this season and plays its final game before nearly a month off on Monday, December 9th when the Greyhounds host Drew University in a non-conference game at 8:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Moravian will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Johnston Hall.
