HUGHES AND ZALESKI NAMED LEHIGH VALLEY SMALL COLLEGE BASKETBALL TEAMS OF THE MONTH

ANNVILLE, PA --- Junior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) and sophomore Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) from the Moravian College basketball teams have been named to the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Teams of the Month for December by the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Organization at its first luncheon of the 2002-03 season at Starters Restaurant in Bethlehem.

The Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Organization is made up of the seven small college schools in the Lehigh Valley including NCAA Division II schools East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and NCAA Division III schools Cedar Crest College, Delaware Valley College, DeSales University, Moravian College and Muhlenberg College.

Hughes, a guard, has helped the Moravian women open the year with a 4-2 record. The Greyhounds have played three nationally ranked teams on the road in the first month of the season, losing to #25 Emmanuel (MA) College, 83-75 in overtime, falling to #18 DeSales University, 81-73, and defeating #18 Lebanon Valley College, 98-94 in overtime. Hughes currently leads the squad in scoring at 16.3 points per game and she has made a team high 18 three-pointers, including a school record seven three-pointers in the victory at Lebanon Valley. Hughes has also contributed 17 rebounds, 14 assists and 13 steals and she was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Emmanuel Tap-Off Tournament.

Joining Hughes on the December Team of the Month were Courtney Porzio from Cedar Crest, Amber Smolinsky of Delaware Valley, Teri Antolick from DeSales, Niki Cox of East Stroudsburg, Jessica Pieczynski from Kutztown and Gwen Doyle of Muhlenberg.

Zaleski, a forward, has led the Greyhounds to a 5-1 record in the first month of the season and he has been Moravian’s leading scorer in four of the team’s six contests. Zaleski tops the squad in scoring and rebounding at 17.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He has also added seven assists and seven steals while shooting 56 percent (42 of 75) from the floor and 90.9 percent (20 of 22) at the foul line. Zaleski was named the Most Valuable Player at the Emmanuel Tap-Off Tournament to open the season.

Joining Zaleski on the December Team of the Month were Brian Singer of Delaware Valley, Michael Venafra from DeSales, Wayne Bishop of East Stroudsburg, Bilal Salaam from Kutztown and Anthony Strachan of Muhlenberg.

The next Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14th.
