FOUR NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Kelly McLean (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) of
the women’s basketball team, sophomore Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor
HS) from the women’s indoor track & field squad, junior Joe
Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) of the men’s indoor track & field team
and sophomore Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) from
the men’s basketball squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes
of the Week for their performances last week.
McLean, a forward, led the Greyhounds to a 2-1 week while averaging
a double-double with 14.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. McLean also
shot 47.2 percent (17 of 36) from the floor and 83.3 percent (10 of 12) from the charity
stripe last week. McLean began the week with 15 points and 11 rebounds
in Moravian’s 73-68 victory over Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action.
She added 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Greyhounds’ 81-68
non-conference victory over Franklin & Marshall College. McLean finished
the week with 12 points and ten rebounds in Moravian’s 68-61 loss at Juniata College.
Moravian is 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the Commonwealth Conference this season. The Greyhounds
will return to action on Tuesday, January 28th in a Commonwealth game at Susquehanna University
beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Rotzell qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships
in a pair of events at the Princeton University Indoor Relays last Saturday. Rotzell won
the triple jump in a provisional qualifying distance of 11.41 meters (37 feet, 5 ¼ inches)
and she placed fourth in the long jump with a provisional qualifying distance of 5.44 meters
(17 feet, 10 ¾ inches). Rotzell also placed second in the 55-meter
dash in 7.3 seconds at the Haverford College Invitational on Sunday. Moravian will return
to action on Saturday, February 1st when the squad travels to the DeShriver Invitational
at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Moore led the Greyhounds at the non-scoring Princeton University Indoor
Relays last Saturday with a third place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.13 meters
(23 feet, ¾ inches), which provisionally qualified him for the 2003 NCAA Division
III Indoor National Championships. At the Haverford College Invitational on Sunday, Moore placed
second in the 200 meters in 23.0 seconds and he was fourth in the in 55-meters in 6.5 seconds.
Moravian will return to action on Saturday, February 1st when the squad travels to the
DeShriver Invitational at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Zaleski, a forward, led the Greyhounds to a 2-1 record last week while
averaging 18.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Zaleski shot 55.6 percent
(20 of 36) from the floor and 78.9 percent (15 of 19) at the charity stripe. In Moravian’s
76-67 overtime victory at Swarthmore College, Zaleski scored 12 points
and he added 12 rebounds. Zaleski tossed in 23 points and added eight
boards in a 68-66 loss to Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action and he finished
the week with 20 points and nine rebounds in a 75-58 victory at Juniata College. Moravian
is 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the Commonwealth Conference this season. The Greyhounds will
return to action on Tuesday, January 28th in a Commonwealth game at Susquehanna University
beginning at 8:00 p.m.
