HVIDOVRE, DENMARK --- Christina Scherwin (Copenhagen, Denmark), a member of the Moravian College women’s track and field team and the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division III National Champion and record holder in the javelin, won the javelin and shot put for the second consecutive year at the 2003 Danish Championships on August 9th and 10th at Hvidovre Stadium in Hvidovre, Denmark.

Scherwin, who won the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference titles in the shot put, both indoors and outdoors, and the javelin, had a winning throw of 55.44 meters (181 feet, 11 inches) in the javelin, which was 7.84 meters farther than her winning distance at last year’s Danish Championships, and she captured the shot put with a Danish record toss of 14.64 meters (48 feet, ½ inch), which was 1.25 meters farther than last year. Scherwin also placed eighth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 11.19 meters (36 feet, 8 ½ inches).

After her winning performance in the javelin last weekend, Scherwin moved up to 36th in the International Association of Athletics Federations World Rankings released Tuesday. Scherwin was 44th in the world last week. Scherwin will be competing at the World University Games in Daegu, South Korea from August 21st to 31st. The javelin trials are on Wednesday, August 27th.

Her goal is to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece representing Denmark. To automatically qualify, Scherwin will need to increase her distance to 60.00 meters (196 feet, 10 inches) in the javelin.

Scherwin, who helped the Greyhounds win their eighth straight MAC Indoor title and 11th consecutive MAC Outdoor Championship, will return to Moravian in time for the fall semester for her final year of eligibility with the Greyhounds.
