FIVE GREYHOUNDS HONORED AS MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Stephanie Beitler (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh HS) from the field hockey team, senior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) of the women’s tennis squad, junior Jill Vaccaro (South Salem, NY/John Jay HS) from the women’s soccer team, sophomore Tyler Chomik (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) of the football squad and junior Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) from the men’s cross country team have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Beitler, a forward, scored three goals last week to help Moravian post a 2-0 record last week and earn the first career victory for first-year head coach Amy Endler. Beitler scored a pair of goals in the Greyhounds 3-2 victory at Gwynedd-Mercy College and she added a goal in Moravian’s 3-2 victory over FDU-Florham. Moravian has a 2-3 record and will be back in action on Wednesday, September 17th when the Greyhounds travel to Haverford College for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match.

Berry, playing first singles and second doubles for the Greyhounds, won three singles and three doubles matches with partner, junior Jillian Iacovelli (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) to lead Moravian to a 3-0 record last week. The Greyhounds are 3-1 overall this season and 1-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth and will return to action on Tuesday, September 16th in a non-conference match at DeSales University beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Vaccaro, Moravian’s goalie, remained undefeated on the years with a 2-0 record last week. Vaccaro had her third shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Haverford College, Moravian’s first win of the year after a pair of 0-0 ties. She had eight saves in the victory including a save on a penalty kick with 15 minutes remaining. Vaccaro allowed her first goals of the season against Delaware Valley College, but the Greyhounds earned a 3-2 overtime win. She had seven saves in the contest. Vaccaro has a 0.45 goals-against average this season with 36 saves and three shutouts. Moravian is 2-0-2 on the year and will host DeSales University on Thursday, September 18th at 4:30 p.m.

Chomik, a defensive back and kick returner, returned two kickoffs for 55 yards with a long of 28 yards and one punt for 15 yards while making five tackles and a pass break-up in Moravian’s 21-14 loss to Juniata College. The Greyhounds are 1-1 overall and in the MAC this fall. Moravian will return to action on Saturday, September 20th in a MAC game at Susquehanna University beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Grogan helped the Greyhounds win the Mule/Falcon Invitational hosted by Cedar Crest College last Saturday. Grogan led Moravian with a second place finish in a time of 27:42.8 on the 8,000-meter course. The Greyhounds will be back in action on Friday, September 19th when they compete in the Monmouth University Invitational.
