FOUR GREYHOUNDS HONORED AS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS) of
the women’s tennis team, senior Kim Zipf (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) from
the women’s volleyball squad, freshman Chris Jacoubs (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair
Haven HS) of the football team and sophomore Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton
HS) from the men’s cross country squad have been named the Moravian College
Student-Athletes of the week for their performances last week.
Gruber won a pair of singles matches for the Greyhounds last week at
fourth singles including the deciding match in Moravian’s 5-4 victory over Elizabethtown
College that clinched the team’s tenth consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Playoff
appearance. Gruber trailed one set and 0-3 in the second set before winning
12 straight games for a three-set victory against the Blue Jays. Moravian is 10-1 overall
and 6-1 in the MAC Commonwealth this season. The Greyhounds will travel to Drew University
of a MAC Semifinal match on Wednesday, October 8th beginning at 3:15 p.m.
Zipf, an outside hitter, became Moravian’s all-time leader in
career kills while leading the Greyhounds to a 2-2 record last week. Zipf averaged
4.33 kills and digs per game while hitting .297 last week. She had eight kills and 13 digs
in a 3-0 loss to #1 Juniata College. Zipf added 14 kills and six digs
in a 3-0 sweep of rival Muhlenberg College. In Moravian’s 3-2 loss to Eastern University, Zipf had
26 kills to break the Moravian career mark of 1,453. She added 20 digs and six blocks. Zipf finished
the week with 17 kills and 26 digs in a 3-1 win versus Rutgers-Newark. Zipf has
1,487 kills in her career at Moravian, and she needs 184 digs to break the Greyhound career
dig mark. Moravian is 14-3 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth Conference this fall. The
Greyhounds will return to action on Wednesday, October 8th in a Commonwealth Conference
match with Albright College beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
Jacoubs, a tailback, made his first career start for the Greyhounds
last Saturday and gained 126 yards and scored two touchdowns on 26 carries in Moravian’s
27-19 loss at King’s College in MAC action. On Moravian’s fifth play of the
game, Jacoubs broke through the right side of the line and made a tackler
miss before racing 65 yards down the sideline for a touchdown giving Moravian a 7-0 lead. Jacoubs ran
the ball all three times on Moravian’s second drive and capped off the series with
a six-yard touchdown run. The Greyhounds are 2-3 overall and in the MAC this fall. Moravian
will host Wilkes University on Saturday, October 11th at 1:00 p.m.
Rarick led Moravian to an 11th place finish among 40 schools in the
8,000-meter race at the Dickinson College Long Course/Short Course Invitational run at
Carlisle High School, the site of the 2003 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in November. Rarick had
his best time of the year, 27:54.20, to place 34th of the 260 runners in the race. Moravian
will return to action on Saturday October 18th in the DeSales University Invitational.
