FIVE GREYHOUNDS NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) of the
women’s tennis team, sophomore Jessica Cordani (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point
Pleasant Boro HS) from the women’s soccer squad, senior Amy Lawrence
(Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic HS) of the women’s volleyball team and freshman Shawn
Martell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and senior John Panikiewsky
(Carteret, NJ/Carteret HS) from the football squad have been named the Moravian
College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Berry, Moravian’s top singles player and on the Greyhounds’ second
doubles team, won a trio of singles matches last week to lead Moravian to its fourth consecutive
Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and the team’s seventh title in the last
eight years. Berry had wins at first singles in an 8-1 victory versus
King’s College, a 7-2 triumph at Drew University in the MAC Semifinals and the 5-4
MAC Championship victory at the University of Scranton. The Greyhounds are 13-1 overall
this fall and play their final dual match of the season on Tuesday, October 14th versus
Marywood University at 2:30 p.m.
Cordani, a midfielder, scored a goal and an assist to lead the Greyhounds
to a 2-0 record last week. Cordani found the back corner of the net on
a penalty kick with 2:59 remaining in the match for a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over
Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action. Cordani then assisted
on Moravian’s winning tally in a 3-2 victory at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
The Greyhounds are 6-1-2 overall this fall and return to action on Tuesday, October 14th
in a Commonwealth Conference match with Albright College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Lawrence, a setter, became Moravian’s all-time leader in career
assists as she helped the Greyhounds to a 3-2 record last week. Lawrence had
202 assists last week in 19 games for an average of 10.63 per game. She now has a total
of 4,475 assists in her Moravian career, breaking Katie Kramer’s career
mark of 4,325. Lawrence also had 80 digs, 21 kills and nine service aces
during the week. Lawrence had 41 assists, ten digs and three service aces
in a 3-0 victory over Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action. In the first
match of the SUNY Cortland Invitational, Lawrence had 30 assists to surpass
the record. She also had 18 digs and six kills in the 3-0 loss to SUNY Cortland. Lawrence had
23 assists, six kills and six digs in a 3-0 victory over D’Youville (NY) College,
and she had 57 assists, 23 digs, four kills, three service aces and two blocks in a 3-2
loss to Western Connecticut State University. Lawrence, who was named
to the All-Tournament Team, finished the SUNY Cortland Invitational with
51 assists, 23 digs and three kills in a 3-2 victory versus Ithaca College. Moravian is
17-5 overall and returns to action on Tuesday, October 14th in a Commonwealth Conference
match at Lebanon Valley College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Martell, a wide receiver and special teams player, was named the MAC
Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance last week. Martell blocked
a Wilkes University punt through the back of the end zone with 1:36 remaining in the game
for a safety and a 22-20 Moravian victory over Wilkes. Martell also caught
one pass for six yards and had one rushing attempt for eight yards
Panikiewsky, a strong safety, led the Moravian defense with 11 tackles
in the Greyhounds’ victory versus Wilkes. Panikiewsky had six solo
stops in the game, and he made six of his team high 11 tackles in the fourth quarter including
a stop of Wilkes’ Brett Trichilo for no gain on a fourth down play. Moravian is now
3-3 overall and in the MAC. The Greyhounds have a week off before returning to action on
Saturday, October 25th in a MAC game versus Lycoming College beginning at 1:00 p.m. at
Steel Field.
