THREE GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO TENNIS ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
ANNVILLE, PA --- Juniors Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) and Becky
Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) of the Moravian College women’s tennis
team have been named to the 2003 All-Commonwealth Conference First Team while senior Lauren
Castagna (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) was named to the All-Conference Second Team
announced by the Middle Atlantic Corporation.
The trio helped the Greyhounds to a 14-1 record this season, including the team’s
fourth consecutive MAC Championship. The title was Moravian’s seventh in the last
eight years under head coach Dawn Benner.
Berry, Moravian’s top singles player, had an 11-2 singles action
this season, and she was 11-5 at second doubles with partner, junior Jillian Iacovelli
(Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS). Berry has a 25-2 singles slate since
transferring to Moravian a year ago.
Deringer, the Greyhounds’ number two singles player, had a 15-2
singles mark this fall, and she combined with Castagna for Moravian’s
top doubles tandem and a record of 11-3. Castagna had a 14-4 singles mark
in the third position to complete her career with a 37-7 singles mark.
Deringer, who has a career singles record of 42-9, was the Commonwealth
Conference Rookie of the Year in 2001 and on the All-Conference First Team a year ago.
Moravian will close out its 2003 season on Saturday and Sunday, October 18th and 19th
at the 2003 MAC Individual Tournament hosted by Drew University.
