MORAVIAN WOMEN'S SOCCER SQUAD EARNS FIRST-EVER BERTH IN EASTERN
COLLEGE ATHELTIC CONFERENCE MID-ATLANTIC TOURNAMENT
CENTERVILLE, MA --- The Moravian College women's soccer team (10-3-4) has been awarded
the program's first-ever berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic
Championships with the Greyhounds earning the sixth seed. The Greyhounds will travel to
third seeded Johns Hopkins University (13-5-2) on Wednesday, November 12th for a first
round match at a time still to be determined.
Wednesday's other first round match will feature fourth seed Gwynedd-Mercy College (12-3-5)
hosting fifth seeded Catholic University (14-4-1) at 2:00 p.m. The semifinals and championship
match will be played at top seed Carnegie Mellon University (10-2-4) on Saturday and Sunday,
November 15th and 16th. Carnegie Mellon will play the winner of the Gwynedd-Mercy/Catholic
match at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday while second seed Lebanon Valley College (11-3-4) will battle
the winner of the Moravian/Johns Hopkins match at 11:00 a.m.
Moravian, under the direction of fifth year head coach Eric Lambinus,
has a 10-3-4 record this season with a 5-1-1 slate in the Commonwealth Conference. The
Greyhounds have played four scoreless ties this season. The National Soccer Coaches Association
of America ranked the Greyhounds eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region last week while Moravian
is seventh in the region in the final NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional poll. The Greyhounds are
in the postseason for the third after appearances in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament
in three of the last four seasons. Moravian is in its tenth year of women’s soccer
with an all-time record of 108-57-8.
Sophomore forward Megan Collins (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney HS) leads the
Greyhounds in scoring with ten goals and four assists for 24 points. Collins was
named to the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team last week. Junior forward Brianne
DeVries (Stockton, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional HS) has contributed four goals
and five assists for 13 points with all four of her goals winning matches. Sophomore midfielder Jessica
Cordani (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) has added three goals and
three assists for nine points.
Senior midfielder Justina Bria (Warminster, PA/William Tennent HS) has
tallied three goals and two assists for eight points while senior midfielder Heather
Bichler (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights HS) has scored a goal and two assists for
four points. Bria earned a spot on the Commonwealth All-Conference Second
Team. Freshman midfielder Kristina Adams (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) has
three goals and an assist for seven points while freshman forward Alisha Davy (Oaklyn,
NJ/Haddon Heights HS) has scored two goals and an assist in her debut season.
Junior defender Kelly Haymaker (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) has
scored a goal and an assist for three points. Sophomore forward Lindsay Pohl (West
Lawn, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) has added a goal and three assists while freshman
defender Erin Gonda (Bethlehem, PA/Salisbury HS), sophomore defender Kindal
Estes (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) and senior defender Rachel
Davy (Oaklyn, NJ/Haddon Heights HS) each have one assist. Gonda was
selected to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team.
Junior goalie Jill Vaccaro (South Salem, NY/John Jay HS) has allowed
just 13 goals in 1,488 minutes of action. Vaccaro has a 0.79 goals-against
average, 92 saves, a 10-3-3 record and eight shutouts this season, which breaks her school
record of six shutouts in a year. Vaccaro combined with senior keeper Kelly
Wakeman (Easton, PA/Easton HS) in shutouts of DeSales University and rival Muhlenberg
College. Wakeman has not allowed a goal in 111 minutes while making six
saves.
Johns Hopkins enters the ECAC Tournament with an overall record of 13-5-2 after falling
to Gettysburg College, 2-1 on penalty kicks, in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference
Tournament. The Blue Jays won the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship in 2000 and 2001, and
Johns Hopkins participated in the NCAA Division III Tournament last fall.
The Blue Jays are led by the duo of sophomore forward Meg McIntosh and
freshman forward Laurie Baumann. Both have tallied 18 points on the year
with McIntosh scoring eight goals and two assists, while Baumann has
seven goals and four assists. McIntosh has, also, put in two game-winning
goals. Freshman midfielder/forward Kaitlin Giannetti has scored five goals
and has ten points on the season. Also with ten points is senior midfielder Erinn
Sosa, who has a team high eight assists and one goal on the year.
Freshman midfielder/defender Jessica McKenzie has helped the team by
knocking in three goals and adding two assists for eight points on the season. Senior midfielder Annie
Colabella also has supplied eight points by scoring two goals and contributing
four assists. Freshman midfielder/defender Lindsey Kimura has supported
the team by scoring three goals for six points this fall and junior midfielder/defender Kathleen
Turley has hit the back of the net twice and has two assists for six points.
Junior defender Sandra Lebo has scored once and added three helpers
for a total of five points. Both senior forward Jess Sapienza and junior
forward Jen Kent have contributed one goal and one assist for three points.
Sophomore defender Laura Elgort has beat the goalie once this fall contributing
two points. Freshman midfielder/defender Sarah Lombardi, junior midfielder/defender Jenn
Sciarpelletti, sophomore defender/midfielder Katherine Taft,
and freshman midfielder Nikkole Haines have all added one assist for one
point.
In goal for Johns Hopkins is sophomore Jen Goebel and senior Anne
Adamczyk. Goebel has a 0.76 goals-against average and 51 saves
in 1,060 minutes of action, while Adamczyk has a 1.00 goals-against
average and 22 saves in 807 minutes this season.
