MORAVIAN WOMEN’S VOLLEYABLL TEAM AWARDED TOP SEED IN ECAC SOUTH TOURNAMENT FOR THIRD STRAIGHT SEASON

CENTERVILLE, MA --- The Moravian College women’s volleyball team has been awarded the top spot in the 2003 Eastern College Athletic Conference South Championships for the third straight year, and the Greyhounds will host the six-team, single-elimination tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 14th and 15th in Johnson Hall.

Friday’s first contest will feature fourth seed Carnegie Mellon University (23-11) against fifth seeded Johns Hopkins University (23-8) at 4:00 p.m. while the second contest will pit third seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College (24-4) against sixth seed Waynesburg College (34-4) at 6:00 p.m.

The Greyhounds and second seeded FDU-Florham (28-9) receive byes into Saturday’s semifinal matches. Moravian will battle the winner of the Carnegie Mellon/Johns Hopkins match at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday while FDU-Florham takes on the winner of the Gwynedd-Mercy/Waynesburg match at 4:00 p.m. The championship contest is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Moravian, under the direction of 11th-year head coach Shelley Bauder, has a 26-9 record this season with a 4-3 slate in the Commonwealth Conference. The Greyhounds lost to Juniata College, 3-0, in the Commonwealth Conference Championship match for the eighth consecutive year last weekend. The NCAA ranked the Greyhounds seventh in the final Mid-Atlantic Regional poll of the year. Moravian fell to Carnegie Mellon, 3-0, in last year’s ECAC South Championship match, and the Greyhounds lost to Grove City College, 3-1, in the 2001 title match, the last time Moravian hosted the ECAC South Championships.

Senior outside hitter Kim Zipf (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS), who has been limited to action in the back row for over a month an injury, has 224 kills this season, and Zipf, who was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team has contributed 309 digs, 22 service aces, 17 blocks, 17 assists, and a .270 hitting percentage. Zipf broke Amy Sandt's career record for kills this season and now has 1,499 career kills. Zipf needs 77 more digs to break Sandt's career mark of 1,634. Sophomore middle hitter Lindsay Siracusa (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury HS) leads the Greyhounds with 374 kills while leading the squad with 119 blocks. Siracusa, who was this week’s Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week, has a .276 hitting percentage to go along with 39 service aces and 121 digs.

Senior setter Amy Lawrence (Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic HS), who has missed the last seven matches with an injury and will miss the remainder of the year, has a team high 1,010 assists, and she has added 334 digs. Lawrence, who earned a spot on the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team, has 78 kills, 47 service aces, 29 blocks and a .251 hitting percentage this fall. Lawrence has become the school record holder in career service aces with 221 and in assists with 4,682 assists, breaking Katie Kramer's mark. Senior libero Alissa Bucsi (Bethlehem, PA/ Bethlehem Catholic HS) is third on the squad this season with 308 digs.

Senior middle hitter Shannon McNeil (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) has contributed 237 kills, 119 digs, 63 blocks, a .295 hitting percentage and 49 service aces while junior outside hitter Christina Wallace (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) has a team high 71 service aces to go along with 343 kills, 300 digs and 34 blocks. Senior right-side hitter Mary Kate Cordisco (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) has 50 service aces this fall, and she has added 203 kills, 99 digs, 16 assists and 34 blocks. Cordisco had a school record 18 service aces in a 3-0 victory versus Washington (MD) College on August 29th, and she set an NCAA all-division record in the first game of that match, serving 25 consecutive points, 15 of them were service aces.

Senior right-side hitter Sara Hollenbacher (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) has contributed 155 kills, 114 digs, 18 service aces and 40 blocks this season while senior defensive specialist Andrea Frankenfield (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) has added 219 digs and 38 service aces. Freshman setter Valerie Korsak (Coplay, PA/Whitehall HS) has 87 digs, 306 assists, 35 kills and 11 service aces in replacement of Lawrence while freshman defensive specialist Ashley Hugo (Bath, PA/Northampton HS) has added 22 digs and eight service aces.

FDU-Florham enters the tournament with an overall record of 28-9 this season under fifth year head coach Al Campora. Sophomore middle hitter Deborah Faber leads the Devils with 398 kills and 118 blocks while added 37 digs and seven service aces. Freshman outside hitter Laura Mildbrand has a team high 736 digs to go along with 335 kills, 22 blocks and 12 service aces. Freshman middle hitter Megan Reed has contributed 310 kills, 87 blocks, 72 service aces and 59 digs while junior outside hitter Lauren Ascolese has added 277 kills, 708 digs, 44 service aces and 11 blocks.

Junior setter Erin LeBan leads the FDU-Florham offense with 1,143 assists and 83 service aces to go along with 323 digs, 82 kills and 22 blocks. Senior outside hitter Kim Torns has contributed 194 kills, 330 digs, 34 blocks and 15 service aces while freshman middle hitter Michele Yered has added 94 kills, 43 digs and 26 blocks. Freshman libero Ashley Flora has 441 digs and 13 service aces this fall while freshman setter Lindsey Flora has contributed 276 digs, 179 assists and 30 service aces.

Gwynedd-Mercy comes to Bethlehem with a record of 24-4 this fall under head coach Sondra Stoczko. The Griffins are led on the court by junior outside hitter Ryann Hennessey and senior middle hitter Jenn Kratowicz, who each have 266 kills this season. Hennessey has added 159 digs, 39 service aces and 16 blocks while Kratowicz has contributed a team high 75 blocks, 90 digs and 46 service aces. Freshman outside hitter Alicia Kluczarits has 255 kills, 256 digs, 50 blocks, 40 assists and 26 service aces.

Junior setter Cathy Fetter controls the Gwynedd-Mercy offense with 999 assists, and she has added 198 digs, 79 kills, 43 service aces and 31 blocks. Freshman middle hitter Hillary Tubbs has 180 kills, 57 blocks, 51 service aces and 68 digs this fall while freshman outside hitter Chrissy Longbottom has added 269 digs, 146 kills, 18 blocks, 28 assists and a team high 70 service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Colleen Bruni leads the Griffins with 315 digs while freshman outside hitter Rebecca Dabrowski has 123 digs on the year.

Carnegie Mellon, last year’s ECAC South Champion, enters the tournament with a 23-11 record this fall under the direction of eight-year head coach Julie Webb. The Tartans are led on the court by freshman outside hitter Catie Fisher, who leads the squad with 462 kills to go with 33 digs, 49 blocks, 42 assists and 38 service aces. Junior middle hitter Chrissy Bartek has a team high 99 blocks to go along with 459 kills, 59 digs and 33 service aces while junior outside hitter Laura Graf has team highs of 575 digs and 44 service aces to go with 320 kills and 52 blocks.

Senior setter Candace Spier controls the Carnegie Mellon offense with 809 assists to go along with 287 digs, 69 kills, 35 service aces and 12 blocks. Freshman outside hitter Amanda Bradford has contributed 231 kills, 313 digs and 33 blocks while senior outside hitter Jennifer King has 514 digs and 16 assists. Freshman middle hitter Melina Yablinsky has 86 kills, 52 blocks, 29 digs and 25 service aces while freshman setter/libero Megan Miyamoto has added 477 assists, 103 digs and 15 service aces.

Johns Hopkins comes to Bethlehem with a 23-8 record this season under the direction of first-year head coach Scott Pennewill. Senior hitter Stephanie Kaliades leads the Blue Jays with 439 kills to go with 342 digs, 36 blocks and 39 service aces. Sophomore hitter Kate O’Callaghan has contributed 358 kills, 447 digs and 30 service aces while sophomore middle blocker Jen Hajj has 197 kills, 78 digs, 55 blocks and 19 service aces.

Junior setter Betsy Baydala runs the Johns Hopkins offense on the floor with 1,101 assists to go with 80 kills, 420 digs, 30 service aces and 24 blocks. Freshman setter/libero Lizzie Kay has a team high 486 digs while senior middle blocker Samantha Raggi has added a team highs of 65 blocks and 41 service aces to go with 162 kills and 122 digs. Junior hitter Skye Young has contributed 118 kills, 95 digs and 32 blocks this season.

Waynesburg enters the tournament with the most victories among the six competing schools, having compiled a 34-4 slate this fall under fourth-year head coach Mike Bruno. Sophomore middle hitter Brittany Morrow leads the Yellow Jackets with 526 kills to go with 288 digs, 55 blocks, 57 assists and 50 service aces. Senior outside hitter Ronnie Jo Meyers has contributed 471 kills, 309 digs, 43 blocks and 39 service aces while freshman middle hitter Kaci Hlad has added a team high 73 blocks with 323 kills, 54 service aces and 50 digs.

Junior setter Katie Beall controls the Waynesburg offense with 1,528 assists to go with 128 digs, 84 kills, 49 service aces and 44 blocks. Senior libero Kathryn Austen has a team leading 475 digs while sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Sachar has contributed 315 kills, 45 digs and 21 blocks. Freshman middle hitter Teia Suder has added 272 kills, 64 service aces, 38 blocks and 34 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Freeman has a team leading 97 service aces to go with 326 digs.
