FOUR GREYHOUNDS NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Juniors Brianne DeVries (Stockton, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional HS) and Jill Vaccaro (South Salem, NY/John Jay HS) from the women’s soccer team and seniors Jeff Lowry (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia HS) and John Panikiewsky (Carteret, NJ/Carteret HS) of the football squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

DeVries and Vaccaro helped the Moravian women’s soccer squad to a 2-1 record last week and a runner-up finish in the 2003 Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Championships. The Greyhounds were seeded sixth in the tournament and opened with a 3-2 overtime victory at third seeded Johns Hopkins University. Vaccaro had two saves in the win. In the semifinal match versus second seed Lebanon Valley College, DeVries scored the game’s only goal in the 61st minute for her fifth game-winning goal of the year while Vaccaro had three saves for her school-record ninth shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory. In the championship match at top seed Carnegie Mellon University, DeVries gave Moravian a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute with her sixth goal of the year, however, the Greyhounds fell to the Tartans, 2-1. Vaccaro had eight saves in the match. Moravian completed the 2003 season with an overall record of 12-4-4.

Lowry, a wide receiver, and Panikiewsky, a defensive back, closed out their careers for the Greyhounds in Moravian’s 24-0 loss at rival Muhlenberg College. Moravian completed the season with a 3-7 record. The media members in attendance voted Lowry the Moravian Most Valuable Player of the Game after catching seven passes for 90 yards. Panikiewsky led the Moravian defense with 11 tackles in the game and he added half a tackle for loss, a pass break-up and a forced fumble.
