TRIO NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) from
the women’s basketball team and senior Kevin Wyers (Hamilton Square, NJ/Notre
Dame HS) and junior Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) of
the men’s basketball squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes
of the Week for their performances last week.
Hughes, a guard, was named to the All-Tournament Team and helped the
Greyhounds to a 1-1 record in the Swarthmore College Tip-Off Tournament. Hughes netted
a team high 13 points with three rebounds in Moravian’s 64-50 victory over Curry
College to open the season. She then scored a team-leading 21 points with six rebounds
and two assists in the Greyhound’s 74-67 loss to host Swarthmore in the championship
game. Hughes made seven three-pointers in the two games and moved within
15 points of becoming the 15th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career.
Moravian will open its 2003-04 home season on Tuesday, November 25th when the Greyhounds
host DeSales University at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference game in Johnson Hall.
Wyers, a guard, and Zaleski, a forward, led Moravian
to a 2-0 record to start the 2003-04 season and the championship of the 22nd Annual Scotty
Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College. Wyers earned a spot on the
All-Tournament Team after averaging 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Wyers tied
his career high with 19 points and he added five rebounds, three assists and three steals
in the Greyhounds 77-62 victory over Elms College in the first round. Wyers then
added 18 points and four rebounds in Moravian’s 60-46 victory over Roger Williams
University in the championship game. Wyers connected on seven of the Greyhounds;
12 three-pointers during the tournament.
Zaleski was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after
averaging 21.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Zaleski opened the season
with 16 points and 12 rebounds versus Elms. Zaleski then scored a game
high 26 points with six rebounds and four steals against Roger Williams. Zaleski became
the 17th player in Moravian history to reach 1,000 points when he hit a lay-up with 18:51
remaining in the second half of the Roger Williams game. Zaleski now has
1,009 points in just 54 career games, and he has been in double figures in 50 of those
contests. Moravian will return to action on Tuesday, November 25th in a non-conference
game at DeSales University beginning at 8:00 p.m.
