FIVE GREYHOUNDS SELECTED AS MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Freshman Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) of
the women’s basketball team, junior Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland
HS) from the softball team, sophomore Jess Cordani (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point
Pleasant Boro HS) of the women’s lacrosse squad, freshman Clint
Quedenfeld (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) from the men’s lacrosse
team and senior Michael Young (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) of the baseball
team have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances
last week.
Applegate, a forward, led Moravian to a 1-1 record last week in the
2004 ECAC Southern Championships. Applegate had 14 points and seven rebounds
in Moravian’s 90-62 victory over Catholic University in the first round. She made
three-of-four field goal attempts in the game and was eight-for-eight at the foul line. Applegate then
added 18 points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists in Moravian’s
73-63 loss at DeSales University in the semifinals. Applegate was five-for-six
from the floor and eight-of-ten at the charity stripe in the game. Moravian completed the
2003-04 season with an overall record of 19-10.
Bortz, a shortstop, led Moravian to a 3-1 record last week at the Atlantic
versus East Challenge hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College. Bortz hit .500
for the week (seven of 14) and extended her school record hitting streak to 21 games dating
back to the second game of a doubleheader at Messiah College on April 15, 2003. Bortz began
the season with a two-for-three performance with a run scored and two stolen bases in a
3-2 loss to Christopher Newport (VA) University to open the season. She was two-for-three
with a run scored and a stolen base in a 6-3, eight-inning victory versus Mary Washington
(VA) College. Bortz was one-for-four with a run and a stolen base in the
Greyhounds’ 4-2 victory versus Huntingdon (AL) College, and she finished the week
with a two-for-four performance and two runs scored in a 4-2 victory over Chowan (NC) College. Bortz was
also perfect in the field at her shortstop position last week with eight putouts and seven
assists. Moravian will return to action on Friday, March 12th at the 2004 NFCA Division
III Leadoff Classic in LaGrange, Georgia, playing the NCAA Division III defending national
champion Central (IA) College at 2:30 p.m.
Cordani, a midfielder, led the Greyhounds to a 1-1 record last week
including the program’s first-ever victory as an NCAA program. Cordani began
the week with four goals, three ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers
in Moravian’s 21-7 loss to rival Muhlenberg College. Cordani added
another four goals, including the game-winner, eight caused turnovers, six ground balls
and five draw controls in the Greyhounds’ 12-6 victory versus Cedar Crest College.
Moravian is slated to return to action on Monday, March 15th in a Middle Atlantic Conference
match at Susquehanna University beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Quedenfeld, an attack, led Moravian to a 23-8 victory over the College
of Mount St. Vincent in the Greyhounds’ first-ever match as a varsity program. Quedenfeld scored
four goals and assisted on 11 others to lead Moravian with 15 points in the match. The
Greyhounds will return to action on Friday, March 12th in a non-conference match at NCAA
Division II Mars Hills (NC) College at 3:30 p.m.
Young, a catcher and designated hitter, led the Greyhounds in hitting
last week with a .454 batting average in Moravian’s four contests. Young had
six hits in 11 at-bats with four RBIs, four walks and a run scored. In the Greyhounds’ season
opening loss to rival Muhlenberg, Young had a single and walk while making
one putout. He added two hits, an RBI and four putouts in Moravian’s first Commonwealth
Conference game of the season, a 3-1 loss to Juniata College. Young was
one-for-three with two walks, an RBI and a run scored in Moravian’s 7-3 win versus
the Eagles, and he finished the series with a two-for-three, two-RBI performance in a 6-5
loss to Juniata. The Greyhounds, who have an overall record of 1-3, will return to action
at the Clearwater (FL) Invitational on Monday, March 8th versus Drew University.
