FIVE GREYHOUNDS SELECTED AS MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Seniors Janelle Brey (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) and Donna
Weiner (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park HS) from the softball team, junior Kirsten
Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) of the women’s track & field squad,
freshman Matt Bailey (Reading, PA/Reading HS) from the men’s track
and field team and sophomore Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) of
the baseball squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week
for their performances last week.
Brey, a third baseman, led Moravian to a 4-0 record last week, including
a 2-0 mark in Commonwealth Conference action. Brey hit .571 for the week
with eight hits in 14 at-bats, and she added eight RBIs, six runs scored, three doubles
and two home runs. She also drew a walk, was hit by a pitch and was flawless in the field
in 12 chances at third base (one putout and 11 assists). Brey was four
for seven with five RBIs including a grand slam, her second of the season, in a doubleheader
sweep of Elizabethtown College. Brey was also four for seven with three
RBIs, including a two-run home run in a sweep of Franklin & Marshall College.
Weiner tossed a pair of complete game victories for the Greyhounds last
week. Weiner defeated Elizabethtown, 6-2, allowing two earned runs on
six hits and three walks while striking out six batters. Weiner then tossed
a three-hit, 1-0 shutout of Franklin & Marshall. She allowed just one walk while striking
out ten batters in the victory. Weiner also had three assists in the field.
Moravian is 13-1 overall, ranked tenth in the nation and will return to action on Tuesday,
March 30th in a non-conference doubleheader versus Wilkes University beginning at 2:30
p.m.
Rotzell had Moravian's only individual championship at the 2004 Lehigh
Valley Championships to open the outdoor season. Rotzell won the 100-meter
hurdles in 15.46 seconds to lead the Greyhounds to a fourth place team finish. Moravian
will return to action at the Muhlenberg College Invitational on Saturday, April 3rd.
Bailey won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.63 seconds, and he captured
first place in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.91 seconds to lead the Greyhounds to a sixth
place finish at the 2004 Lehigh Valley Championships to open Moravian’s outdoor season.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday, April 3rd at the Muhlenberg College Invitational.
Cline, a first baseman, led the Greyhounds to a 3-1 record last week
including a three-game Commonwealth Conference series sweep of Lebanon Valley College. Cline hit
.462 for the week with six hits in 13 at-bats, including four home runs, five runs scored
and seven RBIs. Cline added an intentional walk, a hit by pitch and he
was flawless in the field in 41 chances (40 putouts and one assist). Cline began
the week with a two-for-four performance in a 14-5 loss to Ursinus College, including a
solo home run. After being held hitless in the first game of the series versus the Flying
Dutchmen, Cline was two-for-four in the second game with a three-run home
run. Cline finished the series with a two-for-two performance with a two-run
homer and a solo dinger. Moravian is 5-9 on the season and returns to action on Monday,
March 29th in a non-conference contest versus Alvernia College at 3:00 p.m.
