FIVE GREYHOUNDS HONORED AS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) and
sophomore Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) from the
softball team, junior Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/ Bangor HS) of the women’s
track & field squad, sophomore Dustin McCormick (East Stroudsburg, PA/East
Stroudsburg HS) from the golf team and senior Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton
HS) of the men’s track & field squad have been named the Moravian College
Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Bortz, the Greyhounds’ shortstop, led Moravian to a 4-0 record
last week, including a 2-0 mark in Commonwealth Conference action. Bortz hit
.538 for the week with seven hits in 13 at-bats, and she added two RBIs, three runs scored,
a double and a triple. She also had a sacrifice fly and was flawless in the field in seven
chances at shortstop (four putouts and three assists). Bortz was four
for seven with an RBI, a double and a triple in a doubleheader sweep of Wilkes University. Bortz was
three for six with an RBI and two runs scored in a sweep of Messiah College. Bortz currently
has a school record 35-game hitting streak. During the streak, which dates back to the
second game of a doubleheader on April 15, 2003, Bortz is 66 of 127 (.520)
with 23 multiple hit games.
Hennessy tossed a pair of complete game victories for the Greyhounds
as Moravian posted a 4-0 record last week. Hennessy defeated Wilkes University,
5-2, allowing two earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out eight batters. Hennessy then
tossed a two-hit, 3-0 shutout of Messiah College. She allowed just two walks while striking
out a school-record 14 batters in the victory. Hennessy also had three
assists in the field. She remained perfect on the mound at 9-0 this season and lowered
her ERA to 0.64 while increasing her strikeout total to 66 in 66 innings of action. Hennessy also
has two saves for the Moravian, which is ranked #1 in the nation and has won a school record
17 consecutive games since dropping its season opener. The Greyhounds, who are 17-1 overall
and 4-0 in the Commonwealth Conference, return to action on Tuesday, April 6th in a Commonwealth
doubleheader at Albright College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Rotzell won a trio of events to lead the Greyhounds at the non-scoring
Muhlenberg College Invitational last Saturday. Rotzell captured the long
jump at 5.33 meters (17 feet, six inches), the triple jump with a leap of 11.01 meters
(36 feet, 1 1/2 inches) and the 100-meter hurdles in 15.74 seconds, after a time of 15.68
seconds in the preliminaries, which she also won. Rotzell was also part
of the 4x100-meter relay that placed second in a time of 49.79 seconds. Moravian will return
to action on Saturday, April 10th at the University of Delaware Invitational.
McCormick earned medallist honors with an even-par round of 71 among
the 91 golfers in the Moravian Spring Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course. McCormick’s score
helped the Greyhounds win the tournament with a team total of 298. Moravian is scheduled
to return to action on Wednesday, April 7th at the Elizabethtown College Invitational at
the Hershey Country Club beginning at 12:00 p.m.
Moore won a pair of events to lead the Moravian men’s team at
the non-scoring Muhlenberg College Invitational on Saturday. Moore captured
the long jump in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance of 7.00 meters (22
feet, 11 3/4 inches) and the 100-meter dash in 11.43 seconds. Moravian is scheduled to
return to action on Saturday, April 10th at the University of Delaware Invitational.
