FOUR GREYHOUNDS HONORED AS MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) and freshman Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) of the softball team and freshman Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS) and senior Greg Peters (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) from the baseball squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Hennessy and Homa helped the Greyhound softball team win the 2004 NCAA Division III Regional at Mahwah, New Jersey last weekend and earn Moravian’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III World Series. Moravian is 37-4 overall and will return to action on Friday, May 14th versus Chapman (CA) University at 11:00 a.m. at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in the first game of the double-elimination World Series.

Hennessy, who earned a spot on the Regional All-Tournament Team, tossed a pair of complete game victories to improve her record to 19-2 on the season, a school record for victories. Hennessy defeated fourth seeded Union (NY) College, 5-2, in Moravian’s first game, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout. In the regional championship game, Hennessy tossed her school record tenth shutout of the season, scattering three hits and three walks while striking out eight batters in a 1-0 victory over host and second-seed Ramapo College of New Jersey. Hennessy also had seven assists in the field last weekend.

Homa, who also made the Regional All-Tournament Team, led the Greyhounds at the plate with a .444 average. Homa collected four hits in nine at-bats with an RBI and two runs scored in the tournament. She also had a sacrifice bunt and made 21 putouts from her first base position.

Moore and Peters helped the Moravian baseball team reach the Commonwealth Conference Championship game for the first time since 1990. The third seeded Greyhounds lost to second-seed Juniata College, 4-1, in the championship game, finishing the season at 15-22.

Moore, an outfielder, led Moravian at the plate with a .438 average. He had seven hits in 16 at-bats over the Greyhounds four games in the tournament with two RBIs, a run, a double and a walk. Moore also contributed seven putouts during the week.

Peters, a pitcher, infielder and outfielder, tossed a nine-inning, five-hit complete game shutout of top seeded Messiah College to put Moravian in the conference championship game. Peters, who shutout Messiah twice this season, did not walk any batters in the game while striking out four. Peters also had a hit, an RBI, a double, three walks, two runs, five putouts and an assist last week.
