FOUR GREYHOUNDS NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic
HS) of the women’s basketball team, senior Christina Scherwin
(Copenhagen, Denmark) from the women’s indoor track and field squad, sophomore Michael
El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) of the men’s indoor track and field team
and junior Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) from the
men’s basketball squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of
the Week for their performances last week.
Seaman, a forward, led the Greyhounds to a 3-0 record last week including
a 2-0 mark to open the Commonwealth Conference season. Seaman had a pair
of double-doubles to start the week with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the Greyhounds’ 80-64
victory over Widener University and 17 points and 11 rebounds in Moravian’s 76-50
win at Ursinus College. Seaman finished off the week with a career high
14 rebounds and eight points in the Greyhounds’ 61-53 victory over Susquehanna University.
In the game against Susquehanna, Seaman added two of Moravian’s
NCAA record 35 of 35 free throw performance. During the week, Seaman had
eight assists and six steals while committing just six turnovers. Moravian is now 4-2 overall
and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference. The Greyhounds will play their final game before
the semester break on Tuesday, December 9th in a non-conference game at Drew University
at 6:00 p.m.
Scherwin won the shot put in her final competition for the Greyhounds
with a distance of 13.87 meters (45 feet, 6 1/4 inches) as Moravian began its 2003-04 indoor
track and field season at the non-scoring Lafayette College Invitational. Scherwin will
be taking next semester off to train in Europe as she tries to qualify for the 2004 Olympics
for her native country, Denmark, in the javelin. Scherwin is the two-time
defending NCAA Division III Champion in the javelin and came close to qualifying for the
Olympics this past summer. The Moravian indoor track and field team will return to action
on Sunday, January 18th at the University of Albany Invitational at the New York City Armory.
El Kazzaz captured first place in the pole vault, clearing a height
of 14 feet (4.26 meters) as Moravian began its 2003-04 indoor track and field season at
the non-scoring Lafayette College Invitational. El Kazzaz had the only
top finish for the Greyhounds. The Moravian indoor track and field team will return to
action on Sunday, January 18th at the University of Albany Invitational at the New York
City Armory.
Zaleski, a forward, averaged 19.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games
last week for the Greyhounds. Zaleski had 23 points, nine rebounds, three
assists and three steals in Moravian’s 80-77 victory over rival Muhlenberg College.
He had a double-double with 19 points and ten rebounds in a 77-60 loss at Widener University,
and Zaleski finished the week with 16 points and six boards in an 81-70
loss to Susquehanna University. For the week, Zaleski shot 53.7 percent
(22 of 41) from the floor and 72.2 percent (13 of 18) at the foul line. He also made the
only three-pointer he attempted. Moravian is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the Commonwealth Conference.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Tuesday, December 9th in a non-conference game
at Drew University beginning at 8:00 p.m.
