THREE GREYHOUNDS NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) from
the women’s basketball team, junior Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) of
the women’s indoor track & field squad and senior Joe Moore (Andover,
NJ/Newton HS) from the men’s indoor track & field team have been named
the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Hughes, a guard, led the Greyhounds to a 2-1 record last week and a
1-1 mark in Commonwealth Conference action. Hughes began the week with
16 points and three assists in an 89-59 non-conference victory over Wilkes University.
She then had 18 points and a pair of steals in a 58-47 win at Albright College. Hughes finished
the week with 13 points in Moravian’s 77-64 loss to nationally-ranked Messiah College
in Commonwealth action. For the week, Hughes connected on 39.5 percent
of her field goals (15 of 38), and she made 38.9 percent of her three-point attempts (7
of 18). Hughes also made ten of 12 free throws (83.3 percent). Moravian
is 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the Commonwealth Conference. The Greyhounds will host rival
Muhlenberg College on Monday, January 27th at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference game.
Rotzell, who competes in the jumps and sprints, had a trio of top ten
finishes to lead the Greyhounds as Moravian returned to action at the non-scoring Susquehanna
University Invitational. Rotzell provisionally qualified for the 2004
NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships in the long jump with a leap of 5.51 meters
(18 feet, one inch), good enough for second place in the competition. Rotzell also
took third in the triple jump at 11.13 meters (36 feet, 6 1/4 inches), and she placed seventh
in the 55-meter dash in 7.58 seconds after running a time of 7.51 seconds in the preliminaries.
Moravian will return to action on Saturday, February 7th at the Dick DeShriver Invitational
hosted by East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Moore, who competes in the jumps and sprints, led the Greyhounds at
the non-scoring Susquehanna University Invitational with a third place finish in the 200-meter
dash in 23.30 seconds, and he was sixth in the 55-meter dash in 6.78 seconds after a preliminary
time of 6.77 seconds. Moravian will return to action on Saturday, February 7th at the Dick
DeShriver Invitational hosted by East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
