MORAVIAN’S
SCHERWIN WINS JAVELIN AT DANISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK --- Christina
Scherwin (Copenhagen, Denmark), a member of the Moravian College women’s
track and field team and the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division III National Champion and
record holder in the javelin, won the javelin for the third consecutive year at the
2004 Danish Championships on August 8th and 9th in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Scherwin,
who did not compete for the Greyhounds last spring as she trained and eventually qualified
for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, had a winning throw of 54.15 meters (177
feet, eight inches) in the javelin.
After her qualifying performance
on July 24th for the Olympics, Scherwin moved up to 31st in the International
Association of Athletics Federations World Rankings. Scherwin will be
competing at the Olympics on August 25th in the javelin trials. The top 12 competitors
will make the medal round on the final day of the Olympics, August 29th.
Scherwin qualified
for the Olympics with a throw of 59.36 meters (194 feet, nine inches), which is the Danish
National Record.
Immediately following the
Olympic Games, Scherwin will be returning to Moravian to complete her
final academic semester for her degree in economics.
