53 MORAVIAN FALL STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO MIDDLE ATLANTIC STATES
COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CORPORATION FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College fall athletic teams had 53 members named to the
2004 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Fall Academic Honor Roll with
at least one member from all eight of Moravian’s fall sports.
The MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll, which notes academic excellence by student-athletes,
contains 672 performers as announced by Executive Director Ken Andrews.
The Honor Roll comprises those student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who
participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of
3.20 (4.00 scale) or higher and completed the playing season in good standing. Susquehanna
led in total selections with 67, while Elizabethtown was second with 54 student-athletes
on the list. Moravian was third with 53 student-athletes. Student-athletes are selected
from men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, volleyball, women’s
tennis and men’s and women’s soccer.
The football team had 13 honorees, while the women’s cross country team had ten.
The women’s tennis team had eight athletes honored, the men’s soccer team had
seven, and field hockey had six members of their team honored. The women’s soccer
had four athletes honored while the women’s volleyball team had three honorees and
men’s cross country had two members on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
Leading the selections from the football team, which posted a 7-3 record, were sophomore
wide receiver Shawn Martell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and
junior quarterback Jerry Venturino (Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong HS). Martell scored
five touchdowns this season, with 427 receiving yards while Venturnio completed
107 of 222 pass attempts for 1,774 yards and 16 touchdowns, and Venturino also
scored five rushing touchdowns. Sophomore running back Marc Panepinto (Perkiomenville,
PA/Boyertown HS) had 186 rushing yards while junior wide receiver Russell
Demko (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) had four touchdowns and 256 receiving
yards.
Also earning spots on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll from the football squad were
seniors quarterback Rick Muschlitz (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) and linebacker John
Murgitroyde (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan HS), juniors running back Kevin
Lukich (Ogdensburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley HS), wide receiver Andrew Mazurek
(West Orange, NJ/West Orange HS), and offensive lineman Brenten Runne
(Stanhope, NJ/Hopatcong HS), and sophomores defensive linemen Nick Feo
(Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS), Mike Hurden (Spring Lake, NJ/Wall HS),
linebacker Ryan Moore (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS), and offensive lineman Andy
Remsing (Bath, PA/Northampton HS).
Leading the women’s cross country honorees was junior Julie Leiby (Lehighton,
PA/Lehighton HS). She ran her best at the Alleghany Classic with a time of 27:44.00.
Senior Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS), who was one of two
Greyhounds to earn All-Regional honors as she placed 11th at the 2004 NCAA Division III
Mideast Regional. She also earned All-Conference First Team.
Joining these two women from the women’s cross country team was Chelsea
Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS), who also earned All-Regional honors
and All-Conference First Team. Also on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll were seniors Kellie
Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS), and Alison Stoyko (Reading, PA/Governor
Mifflin HS), juniors Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS), Alexis
Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) and Alicia Hernandez (Jim Thorpe,
PA/Jim Thorpe HS), and sophomores Jen Connolly (Manchester, NH/Manchester
West HS), and Ashley McCuen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS).
The Moravian women’s tennis team had an overall record of 13-3 this year. Leading
the Greyhounds on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll is senior Julie Anderson
(Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) who was 6-2 with her doubles partner. Senior Becky
Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS), the Greyhounds number one singles player
was 9-5 singles mark this fall and a 15-3 first doubles record. Deringer was
also named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year this fall. Junior Nicole
Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS) had a 15-4 record at third singles.
Moravian’s other women’s tennis players on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor
Roll were senior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) with a 10-3 second
singles record, junior Sara Weller (Gladstone, NJ/Bernards HS), and sophomores Kristen
Smith (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS), Courtney Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico
HS), and Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS). Hall and Kokolus
teamed up for a record of 6-4 at doubles.
The Moravian men’s soccer team posted a 7-8-1 overall record. Leading the Greyhounds
on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll is junior Casey Hoffman (Kempton, PA/Northwestern
Lehigh HS). Other players that made it to the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll
were senior Ryan Wilkins (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS), juniors George
Gray (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley HS), Ian Nuno (Middletown, DE/Caravel
Academy HS), and Ryan Walker (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen HS), and
sophomore Pete Cunha (Milford, NJ/Immaculata HS), and Ken Wilson
(Pittsgrove, NJ/Schalick HS).
The Greyhound field hockey team’s MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll honorees were
led by senior midfielder Kelly Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg HS) who had
four goals and one assist this fall. Joining Boone were junior defender Jill Brinckman
(East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS), who started in all 18 games and had
eight defensive saves, and sophomores Elyse Jurgen (York, PA/Red Lion HS),
who had six goals and one assist, Jenna Abramson (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS),
and Alyse Moyer (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS), who each had one assist, and Katie
Custer (Pottstown, PA/St. Pius X HS).
The Moravian women’s soccer team posted a 9-5-4 overall mark this season. Junior Erin
Gonda (Bethlehem, PA/Salisbury HS) led the Greyhounds on the MASCAC Fall Academic
Honor Roll. She started in all 18 games and had two goals and two assists this season.
Senior Kelly Haymaker (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) had three goals
and two assists in her senior season. Sophomores Alisha Davy (Oaklyn, NJ/Haddon
Township HS), who contributed two goals and two assists, and Kristina
Adams (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS), who had four goals also were honored on
the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
The Greyhound volleyball team posted a 15-17 mark this past fall. The Greyhounds were
led on the court by All-Commonwealth Conference First Team honoree junior middle hitter Lindsey
Siracusa (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury HS). Siracusa led the Greyhounds
with 389 kills, seven assists, 23 serve aces, 31 digs, and 96 blocks. Sophomore defensive
setter Ashley Hugo (Bath, PA/Northampton HS) contributed 644 assists,
144 digs, 11 kills, 21 serve aces, and 3 blocks.
Joining Siracusa and Hugo on the MASCAC Fall Academic
Honor Roll was senior outside hitter Christina Wallace (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem
Catholic HS), who added 402 kills and 49 service aces.
The men’s cross country team was led by junior Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton
HS), who placed 35th in the MAC Championships and 66th in the Regional meet.
Junior William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), who finished 61st
in the MAC Championships, was also named to the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
