MORAVIAN’S CARRIONE & RITCHEY NAMED FIRST COMMONWEALTH
CONFERENCE PLAYER & PITCHER OF THE WEEK FOR 2005 SEASON
ANNVILLE, PA --- Sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St.
Dominic HS) and freshman pitcher Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown
HS) of the Moravian College softball team have been named the first Commonwealth
Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week for the 2005 season announced Monday for their
performances last week.
The Greyhounds, ranked #2 in the nation in the NFCA Preseason Top 25 Poll to a 3-2 record
in the team’s first five games of the year. Moravian lost to host Virginia Wesleyan
College in the Atlantic versus East Challenge, 2-0 in eight innings, in the team’s
first action outside this spring before defeating Chowan (NC) College, 3-1, and Frostburg
State (MD) University, 6-0. In other games playing in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the Greyhounds
fell to Christopher Newport (VA) University, which received votes in the NFCA poll, 1-0,
before defeating Peace (NC) College, 11-0 in five innings.
Carrione led the Greyhounds with a .615 average, collecting eight hits
in 13 at-bats with one double, four runs, three RBIs and a walk. Behind the plate, Carrione has
made 29 putouts and 12 assists with no errors in 41 chances.
Ritchey earned victories in her first two collegiate starts to help
second ranked Moravian start the season with a 3-2 record in Virginia Beach. Ritchey actually
saw action in all three Moravian victories. She allowed three hits and four walks in four-plus
innings in the Greyhounds’ 3-1 victory over Chowan. Ritchey also
had one strikeout in the game. She pitched the final inning in a victory over Frostburg
State, allowing one walk. Ritchey completed the week with three innings
of hitless ball in an 11-0, five inning victory over Peace. She allowed seven walks while
striking out four batters.
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Friday, March 11th at the Salisbury University
Seagull Invitational in Salisbury, Maryland, playing nationally-ranked SUNY Oneonta at
10:00 a.m. and Christopher Newport at 2:00 p.m.
