MORAVIAN WOMEN’S TENNIS NAMED ITA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM; EIGHT GREYHOUNDS NAMED ITA SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

SKILLMAN, NJ --- The 2005 Moravian College women’s tennis team, which participated in the conference championship match for the 12th straight season last fall, has been named a 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team for the fifth consecutive year.

Eight of the Greyhounds’ individual players, seniors Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS) and Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS), juniors Courtney Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico HS) and Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS), sophomores Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS), Leah Bradshaw (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) and Jennel Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) and freshman Dyana Swan (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for maintaining at least a 3.50 GPA, earning a varsity letter and being enrolled for at least two semesters.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA eligibility form and have competed in one or more matches are averaged into the cumulative grade point average for the current year (including fall 2005 and spring 2006).
A total of 259 men’s and women’s teams from NCAA schools earned the ITA All-Academic Award, while 26 men’s and women’s programs from NAIA schools and four junior colleges were honored with the largest number, 92 programs, coming from the NCAA Division I women’s programs.

Moravian was one of 54 NCAA Division III women’s teams to win the ITA All-Academic award, and one of five from the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation to earn the honors. Drew University, King’s College, Lycoming College and Wilkes University also achieved team accolades.

Cooke was named to the All-Conference Second Team. She posted a 16-2 singles record and 11-1 at sixth singles. Gruber was named to the 2005 Commonwealth All-Conference First Team. She had an 11-6 record at singles with a 9-5 second singles record. Gruber teamed with Bradshaw for a 13-7 doubles record and a 10-2 record at second doubles. Bradshaw had a 2-1 fifth singles mark.

Yelito put up a record of 14-3, 8-2 at fifth singles. Swan played first singles last year and had a 2-10 record. Hall and Kokolus had a 11-7 doubles record with 9-3 at third doubles. Kokolus put up a 4-0 singles record while Hall was 0-1 in singles action. Angstadt was 4-2 in singles action last season.

A total of 1,402 NCAA student-athletes earn the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award, while 115 NAIA student-athletes and three junior college student-athletes were honored with the largest number, 415 student-athletes, coming from the NCAA Division I women’s programs. Moravian’s eight players were part of the second largest group honored, 328 student-athletes from NCAA Division III women’s programs.

Moravian began its 2006 season on Thursday, September 7th with an 8-1 victory at Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action.
