THE GAME: Moravian looks to win its second straight
game in a Middle Atlantic Conference contest versus Widener University
as Greyhound head coach Scot Dapp coaches the 200th
game of his career. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Rocco Calvo
Field in Bethlehem, PA.
THE COACHES: Scot Dapp (West Chester ’73) enters
his 20th season at Moravian, with a career record of 119-79-1 (.601).
He entered the season in the top 50th in winning percentage among
NCAA Division III active coaches. Dapp, who served
as the president of the American Football Coaches Association in
2005, has earned Coach-of-the-Year honors from the MAC three times
including Co-Coach of the Year in 1997 and has led the ’Hounds
to two appearances in the NCAA playoffs, the ECAC Southeast Bowl
game in 2002, the ECAC Southwest Bowl game in 2004 & 2005, winning
the title in 2005.
Widener coach David Wood (Widener
’91) is in his fourth season at the school with an
overall mark of 20-14 (.588)
THE SERIES: Saturday’s meeting will be the
59th in the series with Widener owning a 38-21 lead. Moravian's
last win in the series was in 1997 with a 27-24 overtime win in
Chester. The Pioneers have won the last eight games in the series
including last year's 34-24 in Chester and a 35-31 victory in Chester
in 2004.
LAST TIME THEY MET: In Chester last fall, Moravian
dropped its second MAC game of the season, falling at Widener University,
34-24. Widener scored on the first play of the game on a 65-yard
screen pass. The extra-point gave the Pioneers a 7-0 lead just 13
seconds into the game. Moravian would answer right back on its first
drive of the afternoon. Running back Chris Jacoubs
finished off the seven-play, 68-yard drive with a ten-yard touchdown
run off the left side. On the carry, Jacoubs set
the Moravian all-time career records for rushing attempts with 649,
points with 198 and touchdowns with 33, all records previously held
by Jim Joseph. Sophomore kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg,
NJ/Somerville HS) added the extra-point to tie the game
at 7-7 with 11:24 remaining in the first quarter. Widener scored
again with 7:24 remaining in the first stanza but the point after
attempt was wide left, leaving the score at 13-7 Widener. Each team
was forced to punt on their next possession with Moravian running
five plays and the Pioneers going three-and-out. Moravian would
have the next chance to points on the board but Reckenbeil’s
41-yard field goal attempt was wide left with 2:09 remaining in
the first quarter. Widener scored on a touchdown pass and the extra-point
gave the Pioneers a 20-7 lead with 12:19 left in the first half.
Widener would get the ball back for with an interception of Moravian
quarterback Jerry Venturino at the Widener 30-yard
line. The Pioneers added another touchdown for a 27-7 lead with
5:27 remaining in the second quarter. Reckenbeil
attempted his second field goal of the game with five seconds left
in the first half, but his 35-yard attempt was wide left to let
Widener head to halftime with a 27-7 lead. Moravian took the opening
kickoff of the second half and drove down inside the Widener-ten
yard line but had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Reckenbeil,
cutting the Widener lead to 27-10 with 10:13 remaining in the third
quarter. Widener drove deep into Moravian before Greyhound sophomore
linebacker Andrew Morrissey (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS)
ripped the ball away, giving Moravian the ball back. The Greyhounds
drove down to the Widener seven-yard line before turning the ball
over on downs. Venturino would score his first rushing touchdown
of the season with a one-yard touchdown dive with 13:12 remaining
in the fourth quarter to cap a ten-play, 64-yard drive. Reckenbeil
added the extra-point to cut Widener’s lead to 27-17. Venturino
ran for 56 yards on seven carries and he completed 22 of 43 pass
attempts for 329 yards, his second straight 300-plus yard game against
Widener. The Pioneers scored their final touchdown with 11:12 remaining
in the game. The extra-point extended Widener’s lead back
to 17 points at 34-17. Moravian would drive into the red zone again
but Widener intercepted Venturino at the one-yard
line on a fourth down play. After forcing a punt, Jacoubs
would score his second touchdown of the game from two-yards out
to finish off a ten-play, 85-yard drive for the Greyhounds. Reckenbeil’s
extra-point pulled the Greyhounds within 34-24 with 2:18 left to
play. Jacoubs finished the game with 138 yards
on 28 attempts to improve his school record total to 3,491 yards
in 26 games. Jacoubs also has school records of
673 attempts, 204 points and 34 touchdowns. Moravian would attempt
an onside kick that was recovered by junior tight end Kris Bisci
(Easton, PA/Easton HS). However, the Pioneers would intercept another
Venturino pass to seal the game for Widener. Bisci
caught one pass in the game for ten yards. Greyhound senior wide
receiver Shawn Martell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic
HS) caught six passes for a career high 133 yards, the
eight highest single game in Moravian history. Wide receiver Ben
Hawkins caught four passes for 62 yards in the first half
before being injured just before halftime while wideout Russ
Demko had three catches for 69 yards. The Greyhounds actually
out-gained Widener in the game, 538 to 476, with Moravian running
82 plays in the game to the Pioneers 61 plays. Moravian also had
the ball for over 32 minutes in the contest. Morrissey
led the Moravian defense with nine tackles while defensive backs
Tyler Chomik and Mario Bevilaqua
each had five tackles.
LAST WEEK: Sophomore quarterback Marc
Braxmeier (Center Valley, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was
13 of 24 for 184 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate
start to lead Moravian to a 33-14 victory over Juniata College in
Middle Atlantic Conference action at Knox Stadium. The Greyhounds
took the opening kickoff and began its first possession at its own
42-yard line. Sophomore running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton,
PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) capped a five-play drive
with a 21-yard touchdown run. Sophomore Brian Reckenbeil
added the extra-point for a 7-0 Moravian lead with 12:45 remaining
in the first quarter. Braxmeier was two-for-two
for 29 yards in his first drive as Moravian’s starting quarterback,
while McCambridge finished the contest with 49
yards on seven carries. The Eagles punted after just three plays
on their first drive. The Greyhounds would get two first downs and
move into Juniata territory before punting. Juniata drove down to
the Moravian 30-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Moravian would punt just after crossing midfield in its next possession.
The Eagles were forced to punt after three plays to finish off the
first quarter. Moravian would score on its first possession of the
second quarter to extend its lead. Braxmeier threw
his first collegiate touchdown pass, a 13-yard score to junior tight
end Kris Bisci to cap the six-play, 44-yard drive.
Reckenbeil’s extra-point went wide to the
left, leaving the score at 13-0 with 12:35 remaining in the first
half. Bisci caught four passes in the game for
55 yards. The Eagles took the ensuing kickoff and drove 85 yards
to score their first points of the game to pull Juniata within 13-7
with 8:08 left in the second quarter. The Greyhounds would get a
43-yard kickoff return from freshman running back Edward
Savoth (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) to start the Moravian
drive at the Juniata 27-yard line. Three plays later, sophomore
running back Tyler de Rouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford
HS) ran off the right side for a 16-yard touchdown. Moravian
went for the two-point conversion with McCambridge
running off the left side for the conversion, giving the Greyhounds
a 21-7 lead with 6:38 remaining in the half. Tyler de Rouen
finished the game with 112 yards on 22 carries. Juniata responded
with an 11-play, 72-yard drive to cut Moravian’s lead to 21-14
with 2:25 remaining in the second quarter. Moravian would have one
more drive in the first half. The Greyhounds would score with 1:12
left on the clock on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Braxmeier
to senior wide receiver Shawn Martell. Reckenbeil
missed the extra-point again to the left, giving the Greyhounds
a 27-14 halftime lead. Martell caught three passes
for 79 yards in the contest. Juniata would take the opening kickoff
of the second half and drive into Moravian territory before punting.
The Greyhounds started their first drive of the third quarter at
their own five-yard line after a 32-yard punt. Moravian picked up
one first two before being forced to punt. The Eagles punted again
after getting into Moravian territory. The Eagle defense stepped
up and forced the Greyhounds to punt for the second time in the
quarter. The Greyhounds would force Juniata to punt again when Moravian
senior defensive back Justin Klement (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall
HS) came off the left side of the line to block the punt.
Freshman defensive back Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor
HS) picked up the ball at the Juniata 31-yard line and
returned it six yards to the Juniata 25-yard line, setting up Moravian’s
next possession. Braxmeier would cap off the four-play
drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to sophomore fullback Morgan
de Rouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) on the first
play of the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds would go for the two
point conversion again but Braxmeier’s pass
was broken up, leaving the Moravian lead at 33-14 with 14:49 remaining
in the game. Juniata would run three plays before punting. After
a good return from Martell, the Greyhounds started the drive at
the Eagle 43-yard line. However, the Greyhounds would punt after
picking up a first down. The Greyhound defense would force the Eagles
to punt again for the fifth time in the second half. Moravian would
also be forced to punt for the fourth time in the half. Juniata
would then drive to the Moravian five-yard line before three straight
incomplete passes gave the Greyhounds’ possession with 3:54
to play. Moravian would run out the clock. Braxmeier
added 28 yards on five carries while Morgan de Rouen
had 12 yards on two carries. McCambridge also caught
two passes for 12 yards while sophomore wide receiver Tyler
Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) had two receptions for
18 yards. Bodine led the Moravian defense with ten tackles while
sophomore linebacker Andrew Morrissey added nine tackles with a
sack, one of four by Moravian in the game. Sophomore defensive back
Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley HS) and junior safety
Zach Santiago (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS)
each had seven tackles with Robinson breaking up
two passes and Santiago adding a sack.
SCOUTING WIDENER: The Pioneers come to Bethlehem
with an overall and MAC record of 1-2. Junior quarterback Matt Campbell
has completed 25 of 43 passes for 390 yards with five touchdowns
and four interceptions while senior quarterback Adam Parcell is
13 of 29 for 137 yards with one score and three interceptions for
Widener. The top target has been senior wide receiver Jamie Schild,
who tied a Widener record last weekend with four touchdown receptions
and has 11 catches for 214 yards and four scores. Sophomore tailback
Khalee Prothro has run for 284 yards and a touchdown on 64 carries,
and he has caught eight passes for 61 yards. Sophomore wide receiver
Elliot White has six catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns for
the Pioneers while senior wide receiver Mike Falkenstein and junior
wide receiver Mike Schmidt each have three catches. Freshman fullback
Ian Decker has contributed 42 yards on seven carries while Parcell
has 26 yards on seven carries. White has carried the ball five times
for 15 yards with a touchdown, and he has an average of 23.8 yards
per kickoff return on five returns. Schmidt, who has 50 receiving
yards, is averaging 4.2 yards per punt return with four returns,
and 16.6 yards per kickoff return on five runbacks. Senior punter
Robert McHugh is averaging 35.8 yards per punt with two fair caught,
five inside the 20-yard line and a long of 47 yards on 17 punts.
Junior kicker Tom Laurich has connected on his only field goal attempt
of 21 yards and he is five-of-eight on extra-point attempts. Senior
safety Todd Fairlie leads the Pioneer defense with 28 tackles, two
tackles for loss, an interception and four pass break-ups while
junior cornerback Orlando Brown has 20 tackles, five pass break-ups,
a forced fumble and a fumble recovery he returned 68 yards for a
touchdown. Sophomore linebacker Patrick Brady has also added 20
tackles with five for loss while senior linebacker Matt Yost, junior
linebacker Mike McFadden and junior safety Shawn Wister each have
15 tackles. McFadden and Wister have each recovered a fumble with
McFadden adding two tackles for loss and a pass break-up.
BALANCED & EXPERIENCED ‘HOUNDS: Of the
81 players on the Moravian roster, 17 are freshmen, 35 are sophomores
and 18 are juniors. There are 11 seniors on this season’s
squad, and the Greyhounds return 57 letterwinners and nine starters.
GREYHOUNDS IN THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCE:
Beginning five seasons ago, the Middle Atlantic Conference became
an 11-team conference instead of two separate leagues. Moravian
was selected to finish sixth in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll this
season while Widener University was picked third. Wilkes University
was selected to win the MAC.
THE MAC STATISTICAL RANKINGS: The Greyhounds are
tied for eighth in the MAC in total defense, allowing 338.0 yards
per game. The squad is tenth in passing defense at 187.0 yards per
game, and the defense is seventh in rushing yards allowed at 151.0.
The Greyhounds are eighth in points allowed at 19.7 per game, and
the squad is first in points scored per game at 26.7. Offensively,
Moravian is fourth in the MAC at 302.0 yards per game. The Greyhounds
are ranked sixth in rushing offense at 121.3 yards per game and
third in passing offense at 180.7 yards per game. Moravian is fourth
in turnover margin with a +0.67 per game average as the Greyhounds
have committed three turnovers while forcing five turnovers. The
Greyhounds are also first in the MAC in kickoff returns with an
average of 26.2 yards per return, fourth down conversions at 75
percent (three of four) and kickoff coverage with a net of 39.9.
Individually, sophomore running back Tyler de Rouen
is third in the MAC in rushing with an average of 87.0 yards per
game, and he is tied for third in scoring at 6.0 points per game,
tied for third in touchdown scoring at 6.0 points per game and sixth
in all-purpose yardage at 92.7 yards per game. Sophomore wide receiver
Tyler Hersch is fifth in the MAC in all-purpose
yardage at 93.7 yards per game. Junior tight end Kris Bisci
is tied for seventh in receptions per game at 333, and he is ten
in receiving yards per game at 42.3. Senior wide receiver Shawn
Martell is tied for fifth in receiving yards per game at
61.7. Sophomore Brian Reckenbeil is second in kick
scoring at 5.3 points per game, and he seventh overall in the MAC
in scoring at 5.3 points per game, first in field goals at 1.33
per contest and fifth in extra-point percentage at 57.1 (four for
seven). Sophomore punter Michael Voskian (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan
HS) is tenth in the MAC in punting at 33.6 yards per punt.
Senior linebacker Cliff Garr (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS)
is tied for second in the MAC with 0.67 fumbles forced per game
while junior linebacker Dan Edleman (Pottstown, PA/The Hill
School) leads the MAC with 0.67 fumble recoveries per game.
Freshman defensive back Brad Bodine, sophomore
linebacker Kevin McGorry (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central
Catholic HS) and senior defensive end Nick Feo
(Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) are all tied for fifth in forced
fumbles at 0.33 per contest. Sophomore defensive back Carl
Robinson is tied for fifth in the MAC with 1.33 passes
defended per contest. Garr and Bodine
are tied for 11th in the MAC in tackles at 7.7 per game while McGorry
is tied for 20th at 6.7. Junior safety Zach Santiago
is tied for 28th at 6.3 tackles per game while Robinson is tied
for 32nd at 5.7 tackles per game and Edleman is
tied for 40th at 5.0 tackles per contest.
MILESTONE & RECORD WATCH: Moravian has two
players moving up the record books. Senior wide receiver Shawn
Martell needs two receptions to move into 14th all-time
and 34 yards to move up to 12th all-time. He needs just 35 yards
to move into 11th and 71 yards to reach the top 10. Martell
currently has 68 catches for 1,230 yards. He is tied for seventh
with ten career touchdown receptions. Sophomore kicker Brian
Reckenbeil is tied for third in school history with 13
career field goals, and he is seventh in extra-points with 32 and
fourth all-time in kick scoring with 71 points. Reckenbeil
needs four extra-points to move up to sixth and 11 points to move
into third.
THE QUARTERBACKS: Sophomore Marc Braxmeier
made his first collegiate start last week against Juniata College
and has completed 19 of 39 passes for 278 yards with no interceptions
and three touchdowns for a 141.22 pass efficiency rating. Braxmeier,
who has been sacked four times, has added 30 yards on eight carries.
Junior Brad Swartz (Temple, PA/Muhlenberg HS) has
completed 17 of 35 passes for 264 yards with a touchdown and an
interception for a 115.65 pass efficiency rating. Swartz
has been sacked six times this season but dies have a one-yard touchdown
run and a long run of 15 yards.
IN THE BACKFIELD: In the backfield, sophomore
tailback Tyler de Rouen has 261 yards and three
touchdowns on 52 carries while sophomore running back Tyler
McCambridge has 57 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Senior tailback Marc Panepinto (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown
HS), who is out for the season with an injury, has added
12 yards on three rushing attempts while sophomore full back Morgan
de Rouen has 16 yards on four carries. Senior fullback
Joe Costanzo (Barnstead, NH/Bow HS & Tilton School)
has added four yards on two attempts.
THE WIDE RECEIVERS: Junior tight end Kris
Bisci has ten catches for 127 yards and a touchdown while
senior wide receiver Shawn Martell has caught nine
passes for 185 yards and a score. Sophomore wide receiver Tyler
Hersch has seven receptions for 122 yards while sophomore
running back Tyler McCambridge has three catches
for 45 yards and a touchdown. Junior wide receiver Sean
Hill (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing HS), who was converted
to the position from quarterback during the week leading up to the
Susquehanna game, has two receptions for 17 yards while sophomore
running back Tyler de Rouen has three catches for
17 yards. Sophomore fullback Morgan de Rouen has
two receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown this season.
OFFENSIVE LINE: Leading the way for the backfield
will be a solid offensive line that returns two starters from last
season with senior Andrew Remsing (Bath, PA/Northampton
HS) and sophomore Timothy McBride (Egg Harbor Township,
NJ/Egg Harbor Township HS) returning. Junior Dave
Kircher (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS), who began 2005 as
a starter for Moravian before an injury in the fourth game of the
year sidelined him for the remainder of the season, also gives experience
to the Moravian line. Junior Eric Adams (Dover, NJ/Dover
HS) and junior transfer Jeff Kocsis (Bethlehem,
PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) have earned the other two starting
positions. Kocsis was a two-year starter for NCAA
Division II East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and earned
on a spot on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East
Second Team last fall for the Warriors. Sophomores Wes Harpel
(East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) and Blair
Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) will also
see action.
DEFENSIVE FRONT: Sophomore defensive end Don
Maxwell (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston HS) leads
the Moravian defensive front with 12 tackles this season including
two for loss and a sack. Senior defensive end Nick Feo
has added ten tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack, two pass break-ups
and forced a fumble while senior lineman Alex Smith-Constantine
(Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus HS) has eight tackles with three
for loss. Sophomore defensive tackle Robert Kadel (Blairstown,
NJ/North Warren HS) has contributed six tackles with one
for loss while senior defensive tackle Michael Liccketto
(Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights HS) has three tackles. Sophomore
defensive tackle Mike Nagle (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace
HS) and junior defensive end Arturo Duran (Ridgewood,
NJ/Ridgewood HS) have each added two tackles while sophomore
Michael Ientile (Manchester, NJ/Manchester Township HS)
has one tackle and recovered a fumble.
THE LINEBACKER CORPS: Senior Cliff Garr
leads the linebackers and the team with 23 tackles with one for
loss, and he has forced two fumbles. Sophomore linebacker Kevin
McGorry has contributed 20 tackles with one for loss, a
forced fumble, a pass break-up and an interception with a 25-yard
return against King’s College while junior linebacker Dan
Edleman has 15 tackles with three for loss, a pass break-up
and two fumble recoveries. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Morrissey
has 18 tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack and two forced fumbles
despite missing the game versus King’s with an injury while
freshman linebacker Jayson Williams (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood
HS) has six tackles and two pass break-ups. Freshman linebacker
Daniel Merker (Leonardo, NJ/Middletown South HS)
has added three stops.
THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD: In the defensive backfield,
freshman cornerback Brad Bodine has a team high
23 tackles including 21 solo stops to go with one sack, two pass
break-ups and a forced fumble while junior free safety Zach
Santiago has added 19 tackles, three tackles for loss,
one and a half a sacks and three pass break-ups. Sophomore strong
safety Carl Robinson has contributed 17 tackles,
a tackle for loss, a sack, an interception and three pass break-ups
while senior cornerback Israel Aguila (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom
HS) has nine tackles and three passes defended. Sophomore
cornerback Ryan Andrew (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) added
two tackles while sophomore defensive back Eric Brinkerhoff
(Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) has two tackles and a half sack.
KICKING GAME: Sophomore Brian Reckenbeil
is four-for-five on field goal attempts this season with
a career long of 42 yards versus King’s College, and he is
four-of-seven on extra-points. Reckenbeil is averaging
56.9 yards per kickoff as well, making opponents receive the kickoff
at their own eight-yard line. Sophomore punter Michael Voskian
is averaging 33.6 yards per punt on 13 kicks with three fair caught
and four inside the 20-yard line. Voskian’s
longest punt of the season is 40 yards at Susquehanna and versus
King’s.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Sophomore wide receiver Tyler
Hersch is averaging 37.8 yards per kickoff return on four
returns with a 92-yard touchdown versus King’s College. The
return was Moravian’s third for a touchdown of more than 90
yards since 2002. Senior Marc Panepinto averaged
42.5 yards per kickoff return after a 72-yard runback on his second
return in the season opener before being knocked out for the season
with an injury. Freshman running back Edward Savoth
has two kickoff returns for 46 yards with a long of 37 yards at
Juniata, and he has three tackles. Freshman quarterback Ryan
Rempe (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley HS) has returned five
punts for an average of 8.2 yards and a long return of 14 yards
while sophomore Tyler McCambridge has two punt
returns for 32 yards. Senior wide receiver Shawn Martell also has
two punt returns for 28 yards. Sophomore running back Morgan
de Rouen has made six tackles on special teams while junior
wide receivers Sean Hill and Allan Fatzinger
(Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) each have three tackles.
Senior defensive back Justin Klement has blocked
a punt this season, and he has added a tackle and a pass break-up.
OVERTIME ‘HOUNDS: Moravian has played a
total of seven overtime games since the NCAA instituted the rule
for the 1996 season and is 5-2 all-time in the extra-session. Last
year was the fifth time since 1996 that the Greyhounds did not play
at least one overtime game.
WINNING WAYS: Moravian had 11 consecutive winning
seasons—all under Coach Scot Dapp, from 1987
to 1997 and has had 15 winning seasons in Dapp’s
19 years. The 11-straight winning seasons is the longest in school
history. Dapp ranks third among Greyhound coaches in winning percentage.
ON THE AIRWAVES: For the 10th straight year, the
Greyhounds' games will be on the radio. Moravian's games will be
aired on WYHM 1470 AM for the third straight year. Phil
May calls the play-by-play call with color commentary and
technical assistance from John Elliott. The games

STARTERS PLAYER OF THE GAME: As part of Moravian's
radio contract with 1470 WYHM, the announcers will select the Starters
Player of the Game for Moravian during the St. Luke's Hospital Post-Game
Show. Last week, sophomore quarterback Marc Braxmeier
was named the Starters Player of the Game after completing 13 of
24 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate
