THE SERIES: Saturday’s meeting will be the 36th in the series with Moravian holding a 29-15-1 advantage. Wilkes snapped a six-game losing streak to Moravian with a 27-17 win in Bethlehem. The Greyhounds earned a 34-27 victory the last time the teams played in Edwardsville.

LAST TIME THEY MET: In Bethlehem last fall, Moravian put together a second half rally but was unable to pull out a Homecoming victory in a 27-17 loss to Wilkes University in an MAC contest at Rocco Calvo Field. The game was played in a light rain and without an operating scoreboard. Moravian took the opening kickoff and returned it to midfield, after driving down to the Wilkes 39-yard line, the Greyhounds were forced the punt. The snap went over punter Corey Czerniak’s head, similar to a play the last time the two teams met in Bethlehem that allowed Moravian to rally and win the game in 2003. Czerniak fell on the ball back at the Moravian 35-yard line. The Greyhound defense held and forced a short punt. On a third-and-seven play on the ensuing drive, Moravian senior quarterback Jerry Venturino had a pass tipped and intercepted. Two plays later, Wilkes scored to give the Colonels the 7-0 lead with 8:42 remaining in the first quarter. Moravian would be forced to punt again on its next drive after picking up one first down. The Greyhounds would stop Wilkes’ next possession after five plays when cornerback Israel Aguila (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) intercepted a pass on the Moravian 11-yard line. However, Moravian was unable to move the ball and punted again on the final play of the first quarter. Wilkes would run eight plays to go 47 yards and extend their lead on another short run. The extra-point was never attempted because of a bad snap, leaving the score at 13-0 Wilkes with 11:04 remaining in the second quarter. The next three drives all ended in punts with two by the Greyhounds, the second of which pinned Wilkes on its own two-yard line. The Colonels would drive the entire length of the field in eight plays to score the third touchdown of the first half with just 29 seconds left before the intermission. The Colonels held a 20-0 halftime lead. After halftime, Wilkes received the opening kickoff. The Greyhound defense limited the Colonels to minus-one yard on three plays and forced a punt. Moravian began its first drive of the second half from its own 40-yard line. The Greyhounds drove down to the Wilkes 15-yard line on six rushing plays including a 22-yard gain by fullback Kevin Lukich and a total of 22 yards on two carries by junior running back Chris Jacoubs. Moravian settled on a 32-yard field goal by kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS), his fifth field goal of the season, to put the Greyhounds on the board and cut the Wilkes lead to 20-3 with 9:09 remaining in the third quarter. Jacoubs was limited 76 yards on 24 carries while Lukich had 30 yards on five attempts. Jacoubs did move past 700 career rushing attempts in the game. Wilkes was forced into its second straight three-and-out on the following drive. Moravian took over on its own 16-yard line after a punt and drove 84 yards in 14 plays for its first touchdown of the game. Venturino capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run, his third of the season. On the drive, Venturino had a run of 24 yards and he completed two of three passes for 28 yards. Reckenbeil added the extra-point to cut Wilkes’ lead to 20-10 with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Greyhound defense stepped up again and forced the Colonels into their third three-and-out of the second half. Moravian took over on its own 46-yard line and needed nine plays two pull within three points. Venturino completed both of this passes on the drive, the second of which was a 20-yard touchdown to wide receiver Ben Hawkins. Venturino completed ten of 23 passes for 115 yards, and he ran for 24 yards on nine carries. Hawkins grabbed four passes for 40 yards, and the touchdown was the 16th of his career. Reckenbeil made his 19th straight extra-point of the season cutting the Colonels lead to 20-17 with 9:51 remaining in the game. The Colonels finally put together their first drive of the second half after taking over on their own 32-yard line after the kick off. Wilkes used 15 plays to cover the 68-yards to the end zone, taking a 27-17 lead with just 4:02 to play. Moravian would end up turning the ball over of downs on its next possession; however, the Greyhounds forced the Colonels to punt with 1:20 left giving the Greyhound offense one more shot. After moving up to the Moravian 31-yard line, Venturino kneeled down to run out the clock on the game’s final play. The Colonels had the advantage in total yards in the game 307 to 224 while the Greyhounds held the ball for 32:37. Linebacker Andrew Morrissey (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) led the Moravian defense with eight tackles with half a tackle for loss while defensive back Mario Bevilaqua, linebacker Chad DiFelice and junior linebacker Cliff Garr (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) each had seven tackles. DiFelice added one of the Greyhounds’ two sacks, and he also forced a fumble, his fifth forced fumble of the season, while Garr had a fumble recovery.

LAST WEEK: Sophomore running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) ran for a career high 166 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries to help Moravian overcome a 7-0 halftime deficit in a 28-14 Middle Atlantic Conference victory over FDU-Florham on Homecoming at Rocco Calvo Field. The offenses started slowly in the game with FDU-Florham punting on its first three possessions and Moravian turning the ball over on downs once and punting once. On the Devils third drive, FDU-Florham had a touchdown called back by an illegal forward pass penalty. Midway through the second quarter with the Greyhounds driving, Moravian sophomore fullback Morgan de Rouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) was stripped by FDU-Florham, which return the ball 60 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter. Moravian would respond with a good kickoff return and a pair of McCambridge runs to move the ball down to the FDU-Florham 30-yard line. However, the Greyhounds’ drive would stall and sophomore kicker Brian Reckenbeil came on for a 40-yard field goal attempt into the wind. The kick fell a few yards short of the uprights, preserving FDU-Florham’s 7-0 lead. Freshman defensive back Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) would get the ball right back for Moravian, intercepting a pass on the second play of the drive. However, the Greyhounds would loose yardage on the drive and ended up punting. The Devils ran out the clock and went into the locker room with a 7-0 lead despite Moravian having a 121-57 advantage in total offense yards at the intermission. The Greyhounds received the opening kickoff of the second half and drive 48 yards in 14 plays, taking 7:33 off the clock. Reckenbeil would finish off the drive with a 38-yard field goal with the wind, cutting FDU-Florham’s lead to 7-3 with 7:19 remaining in the third quarter. FDU-Florham would pick-up two first downs on its first drive of the second half but would eventually be forced to punt the ball back to Moravian. The Greyhounds took over on their own 22-yard line and after an incomplete pass would use four consecutive runs by McCambridge including a game-long 35 yard scamper, to move the ball down to the FDU 22-yard line. The Greyhounds, however, would settle for a 39-yard field goal by Reckenbeil to cut the Devil lead to 7-6 with just 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter. After forcing FDU-Florham to punt after three plays, Moravian took over at its own 24-yard. The Greyhounds drove down the field, picking up a pair of first downs on passes from freshman quarterback Ryan Rempe (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley HS), making his first career start, to junior wide receiver Sean Hill (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing HS). The first completion was for nine yards while the second was for 31 yards and put the ball on the Devil six-yard line. Three plays later, McCambridge leaped over the pile and into the end zone, giving Moravian its first touchdown of the game. McCambridge would then run off the right side and into the end zone for the two-point conversion to give the Greyhounds a 14-7 lead 8:30 remaining in the game. Hill finished the game with three receptions for 52 yards. After FDU-Florham picked up a first down, Moravian senior linebacker Cliff Garr knocked a pass up in the air and then he grabbed it and raced down the sideline for a 46-yard return before being tackled at the FDU one-yard line. McCambridge would run the ball twice but was stopped short of the goal line. On third down, Rempe rolled out to his right and looked to trying a quarterback keeper before stopping and finding junior tight end Kris Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) in the back of the end zone for his first career touchdown pass. Reckenbeil’s extra-point gave the Greyhounds a 21-7 lead with 3:43 remaining. The point by Reckenbeil moved him into third in school history with 82 points. Rempe completed 11 of 17 passes for 113 yards in the game, and he added 15 yards on seven carries and was sacked just once. On FDU-Florham’s first play of the ensuing drive, Moravian sophomore linebacker Andrew Morrissey, stripped the ball after a completed pass and returned the fumble ball nine yards. However, the Greyhounds would give the ball back to the Devils on their second play when McCambridge fumbled. The Devils switched quarterbacks but dropped the first snap. Moravian sophomore defensive lineman Don Maxwell (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston HS) picked up the ball at the FDU 31-yard line and returned it into the end zone for a touchdown. Reckenbeil’s extra-point extended Moravian’s lead to 28-7 with 1:47 to play in the game. The Devils drove right down the field and into the end zone for the first time in the game on offense to cut Moravian’s lead to 28-14 with 35 seconds remaining. The Devils tried an onside kick and would recover the ball when Moravian freshman tight end Brian Dencker (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) had the ball bounce off his leg.
