MORRISON NAMED COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE BASEBALL
PLAYER & PITCHER OF THE WEEK
ANNVILLE,
PA --- Senior catcher Colin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere
HS) and freshman pitcher Christopher Morrison (Middlesex,
NJ/Immaculata HS) of the Moravian College baseball team
has been named the Commonwealth Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher
of the Week for their performances last week.
The duo helped Moravian to a 3-0 start to the 2007 Commonwealth
Conference season last week. The Greyhounds have won four straight
for the first time since the 2002 season and are 6-5 under first-year
head coach Paul Engelhardt, surpassing the win
total from the entire 2006 season in just 11 games.
Welles, who hit .667 last week with six hits
in nine-at-bats, started the week with a four-for-five performance
in a 9-6 win at Widener University that included a pair of doubles,
two RBIs and two run scored. Welles, pictured at
right, then went one-for-two with a run and a pair of walks in a
5-1 victory over Susquehanna University in Moravian’s home
opener. Welles finished the week with another one-for-two
performance with a walk and a run as the Greyhounds swept Susquehanna
with a 3-1 win in the second game. Welles played
all 23 innings behind the plate for Moravian with 14 putouts and
four assists, and he threw out two of three steal attempts during
the week.
Morrison,
making just his third collegiate start, tossed his second complete
game of the season in the 3-1 victory over Susquehanna. Morrison,
pictured at left, allowed just three hits and a walk while striking
out seven batters in the game. He also had three assists and the
final putout of the contest. Morrison is 2-0 on
the season with a shutout.
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 27th
in a Commonwealth Conference game at Susquehanna University beginning
at 3:30 p.m. in Selinsgrove.
