MORAVIAN HAS 35 STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO THE LANDMARK CONFERENCE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

MADISON, NJ --- The Landmark Conference has recognized 357 student-athletes including 35 from Moravian College by selecting them for the 2007 Fall Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. The honorees were selected from all eight Landmark Conference institutions.

The Landmark Academic Honor Roll recognizes all fall student athletes of sophomore standing or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The student-athletes must complete the fall season in good standing with their team. All eight Landmark Conference institutions placed at least 18 athletes on the Academic Honor Roll and all six fall Landmark sports were represented on the team.

The Landmark Fall All-Academic Team, which features two male and two female student-athletes from each Landmark institution will be released later this fall.

The Landmark Conference is in its first season of competition and includes eight like-minded institutions covering the mid-atlantic region. The Landmark held its first championships this fall, and sent seven programs to either the NCAA or ECAC postseason.

Moravian had student-athletes selected from all six of its fall teams that compete in the conference with the women’s soccer team leading the way with ten honorees.  The men’s soccer and field hockey programs each had seven student-athletes earn Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll accolades while the men’s and women’s cross country teams each had four selections.  The women’s volleyball squad had three student-athletes named to the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Junior midfielder Tracy Fitzpatrick (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional HS), the Landmark Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year, and sophomore forward Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, NJ/Butler HS), who was on the Landmark Women’s Soccer All-Conference First Team with Fitzpatick lead the honorees from the women’s soccer squad.  The Greyhounds have a 15-5-1 record and will begin competition in the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament on Saturday, November 10th at Hamilton (NY) College.

Sophomore defender Terri Roberts (Danville, PA/Danville HS) was a member of the Landmark Women’s Soccer All-Conference Second Team and is joined on the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll by senior midfielders Jill Newswanger (Pine Grove, PA/Pine Grove HS) and Allison Solomita (Chatham, NJ/Chatham HS), junior defender Alexandra Frascella (Chatham, NJ/Chatham HS) and sophomores midfielder/forward Brittany Deiling (Chews Landing, NJ/Triton Regional HS), midfielder Amanda Friedman (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS), midfielder JeriAnne Weiss (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) and midfielder Kathleen Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington HS).

Senior midfielder Ryan Hess (Harleysville, PA/Souderton HS) from the men’s soccer team earned Landmark All-Conference Second Team accolades and leads the men’s soccer squads academic honor roll honorees.  The Greyhounds were 7-11 overall this season and missed the Landmark Conference Tournament by one match. 

Joining Hess on the squad are seniors defender Daniel Scavone (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South HS) and defender Ken Wilson (Pittsgrove, NJ/Schalick HS), junior goalie Chris Nederostek (Lansdale, PA/Christopher Dock HS) and sophomores defender Gary Grimes (Howell, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), midfielder Blake Ritchey (Harleysville, PA/Souderton HS) and midfielder Michael Tarulli (Bear Creek, PA/James Coughlin HS).

The field hockey team, which posted a 7-8 overall record and missed the Landmark Conference Tournament by a match as well, had a pair of seniors on the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, midfielder Beverly Beaver (Merchantville, NJ/Pennsauken HS) and forward Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken HS)

Also making the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll were juniors midfielder Samantha Bell (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS), defender Laura Boyd (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS), forward Julia Garofalo (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township HS) and midfielder/defender Lindsey Santacross (Bennington, VT/Mount Academy) and sophomore midfielder Damara Varney (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS).

Leading the honorees for the women’s cross country squad, which was second at the 2007 Landmark Conference Championships, was junior Kayla Teeling (Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg HS), who earned First Team Landmark All-Conference honors with a runner-up finish at the conference championships.  Also making the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll were senior Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) and juniors was Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS).

The Greyhound men’s cross country teams honorees included senior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hills West HS), junior John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan HS) and sophomores Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS). The Greyhounds placed seventh at the 2007 Landmark Conference Championships.

A trio of seniors are the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll selections from the Moravian women’s volleyball team, which finished 18-13 overall and played in the Landmark Conference Tournament Semifinals.  Senior outside hitter Rachel Radocha (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) earned a spot on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team, and she is joined on the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll by seniors libero Elise Martin (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) and right side hitter Katherine Perkins (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS).
