MORAVIAN MEN’S & WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD TEAMS WIN 2008 ECAC DIVISION III OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

SRINGFIELD, MA – The Moravian College men’s & women’s track & field teams captured the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Outdoor Championships on Friday at the 2008 meet hosted by Springfield College.

The Greyhound men captured their first-ever ECAC Championship with a team score of 88 points after scoring 87 points on the second day of the two-day meet.  Moravian, which was second at the 2008 ECAC Indoor Meet, was first of 53 schools that scored a point with SUNY Cortland second with 60 points and host Springfield was third with 52 points.

The Moravian women won their second ECAC Championship of the year after winning the indoor title in March.  The Greyhounds, who led after the first day of competition on Thursday, posted a two-day score of 57 points to lead the 53 schools that scored a point, and SUNY Brockport followed Moravian with 47 points while host Springfield was third with 40 points.

On the men’s side, Greyhound senior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) was named the ECAC Male Outstanding Performer of the Meet, after winning three individual titles and a relay and placing second in a fourth individual event and second relay.  Brown won the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.62 seconds, the 110-meter high-hurdles in 14.37 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 7.10 meters (23 feet, 3 ½ inches).  Brown was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash in 10.82 seconds. 

Brown joined with senior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS), junior Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) and freshman Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X HS) to win the 4x100-meter relay in a school record time of 41.72 seconds while Brown teamed with senior Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) and freshmen Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) and Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) for a second place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:19.25.

Tussey was a runner-up in a pair of events.  He was second to Brown in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.45 seconds, and Tussey was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.55 seconds, just one hundredth of a second out of first place.

Other point scorers for the Moravian men included Shaffer taking third in the 100-meter dash in 10.93 seconds and Woodruff in sixth place in 11.07 seconds.  Junior Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) was third in the shot put with a toss of 15.10 meters (49 feet, 6 ½ inches) while junior Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) was eighth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 ¼ inches).  Woods’ point was the only one Moravian picked up on the first day of competition.

For the women, sophomore Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) earned the team’s only individual championship with a first place finish in the pole vault, clearing a school record 3.87 meters (12 feet, 8 ¼ inches).

The Greyhounds did have three runner-up finishes and a relay team take second place as well.  Sophomore Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) was second in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.85 seconds while sophomore Symonne Scott (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) was second in the long jump with a leap of 5.46 meters (17 feet, 11 inches) and freshman Mary King (Paramus, NJ/Paramus HS) was the runner-up in the javelin throw with a toss of 41.06 meters (134 feet, eight inches).  Posimo and Scott ran on Moravian’s second place 4x100-meter relay team with sophomore Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS) and freshman Sydni Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park HS) which posted a time of 47.89 seconds.

Wisniewski scored in a pair of individual events with a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash in 13.17 seconds and a seventh place showing in the 400-meter dash in a school record time of 58.19 seconds.  Junior Christine Kihm (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.42 meters (11 feet, 2 ½ inches) while freshman Kaleen Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan HS) was sixth in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.65 meters (120 feet, 3 ¼ inches) and sophomore Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) was eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.73 meters (150 feet).

Posimo, Heim and Wisniewski joined sophomore Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) on the 4x400-meter relay squad that placed seventh in a time of 4:04.98 to earn two points.
