31 MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO LANDMARK CONFERENCE WINTER ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

MADISON, N.J. --- The Landmark Conference has recognized 236 student-athletes including 31 students from Moravian College by selecting them for the 2009 Winter Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. The honorees were selected from all eight Landmark Conference institutions.

The Landmark Academic Honor Roll recognizes all winter student athletes of sophomore standing or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The student-athlete must complete the winter season in good standing with their team. All eight Landmark Conference institutions placed at least 18 athletes on the Academic Honor Roll and all six winter Landmark sports were represented on the team.

The Landmark Winter All-Academic Team, which features two male and two female student-athletes from each Landmark institution will be released later this winter.

The Landmark Conference is in its second season of competition and includes eight institutions covering the mid-Atlantic region. The Landmark crowned six team championships this winter, and sent eight programs to either the NCAA or ECAC postseason.

Moravian had student-athletes selected from all four of its winter teams that compete in the conference with the women’s track and field team leading the way with 15 honorees. The men’s track and field had eight student-athletes earn Landmark Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll accolades while the men and women’s basketball teams each had four selections.

Juniors Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) and Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy HS) led the honorees for the women’s track and field team, with both competing in the 2009 ECAC Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Senior Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) and juniors Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) and Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South) competed in the 2009 Landmark Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this year. The women’s track and field team was able to send athletes to both the 2009 ECAC Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships and the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.

Also making the Landmark Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll were seniors Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS), juniors Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS), Christine Kihm (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS), and Aliina Ross Paoli, PA/Conestoga HS) and sophomores Mallory Goggins (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Friends HS), Tara Chiarella (Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area HS), Molly DuVall (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township HS), Alexandra Lopez (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) and Kaleen Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan).

Leading the honorees for the men’s track and field team are seniors Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS), Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS), and Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS), and sophomores Jesse Miller (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg HS) and Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) who all competed in the 2009 Landmark Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Also making the Honor Roll are juniors Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS), Steven DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS), and sophomore Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS). The Men’s Track and Field team was also able to send athletes to the 2009 ECAC Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Making the 2009 Winter Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll from the men’s basketball team were junior forwards Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) and Joseph Munley (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS), sophomore forward Christopher Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) and sophomore guard Ryan O’Donnell (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS).

Junior guards Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS), Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS), and Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) and sophomore guard Jennie Miller (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg HS) were named 2009 Winter Landmark Conference All-Academic Honor Roll for this season. The women’s basketball ended its 21-7 season in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, losing to Tufts University.  It was Moravian’s eighth straight postseason appearance.
