MORAVIAN HONORS SENIOR STUDENT-ATHLETES;
DeBONIS, FITZPATRICK & ROBINSON NAMED SENIOR ATHLETES OF THE YEAR;
Dave Rank Awarded H.T.D. Gillespie Award

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College honored its 2009 senior student-athletes at its annual Senior Athletics Awards Banquet Wednesday night in Johnston Hall.  Softball player Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) and soccer student-athlete Tracy Fitzpatrick (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional HS) were named the Co-Outstanding Senior Female Athletes while football player Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley HS) was honored with the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete award.  The Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete awards were presented to women’s tennis student-athlete Dyana Swan (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) and football player Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS).  The H.T.D. Gillespie Award for outstanding service to Moravian’s athletics program was presented to Dave Rank.

DeBonis, who saw action as a pitcher and a designated player this spring had a 14-8 record in the circle in 2009.  She has added four shutouts, a save and a 1.24 ERA to go with 92 hits allowed, 45 runs, 27 earned runs, 46 walks and 161 strikeouts in 152 innings of action.  At the plate, DeBonis, who was named a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Second Team All-American in 2007 when Moravian reached the World Series, had a .346 average with 45 hits in 130 at-bats, 27 runs, 25 RBIs, nine doubles, a triple, two homers, 19 walks and three stolen bases.  DeBonis, who was the Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Year last season while making the Landmark All-Conference First Team as both a pitcher and a designated player each of the last two years, also has seven putouts and 14 assists in 22 chances in the field.  DeBonis made the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region First Team in 2007 and 2008 and the Third Team this spring.  She was also Moravian’s Co-Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Outstanding Athlete.  DeBonis finished her career second in school history with 528 strikeouts while recording a 51-13 record, a 1.30 ERA and 26 shutouts in 435 innings.

Fitzpatrick, who was named Moravian’s Co-LVAIAW Outstanding Athlete for the school and the Women’s Soccer Most Outstanding Athlete, was named the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, and she led the 2008 Greyhounds in scoring with 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points including three game-winning goals and her first two career hat tricks.  Fitzpatrick also helped Moravian to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year as the team was 14-6-2 and won its first-ever conference title by winning the 2008 Landmark Conference Tournament, and she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team this past fall. Fitzpatrick, whomissed the entire 2006 season due to an injury, is third in school history with 87 points in her career of 33 goals, ranked third in the record books, and 21 assists, which is tied for second, in just three seasons.

Robinson, a three-year starter at safety and a two-year captain for the Greyhounds, was tied for third on the Moravian defense this fall with 66 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, 13 passes defended including a team high five interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.  Robinson, who was on the All-Centennial Conference First Team and ECAC Division III Southwest All-Star Team this past fall and the All-Centennial Conference Honorable mention last year, finished his career with 169 tackles and 25 passes defended including 14 interceptions. 

Swan, who was on the Landmark All-Conference First Team as both a singles player and a doubles player this spring while leading Moravian to its second straight Landmark Conference Championship, had a 9-10 singles slate of her own this season with a 9-9 record at second singles.  Swan, who was also on the Landmark All-Conference First Team in 2008 as a doubles player, finished her career tied for fourth in school history with 40 career doubles victories.  Swan has a 3.80 grade point average, and she is majoring in mathematics and elementary education.

McCambridge had a team high 812 yards and nine touchdowns on 138 carries that included a career long run of 79 yards at Gettysburg College, the fifth longest run in school history.  McCambridge, who was on the All-Centennial Conference Second Team and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team this past fall, finished his career seventh in school history with 2,132 career rushing yards and fifth in career rushing attempts with 444.  McCambridge had 18 career rushing touchdowns, and he caught the second longest touchdown pass in school history this season covering 80 yards against Johns Hopkins University.  McCambridge, who was on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2007, is majoring in biology.  McCambridge has a 3.53 grade point average, and he is majoring in biology.

Rank has made many contributions to the Moravian Athletic Department since he opened Starters Pub in April 2000 including sponsoring both Moravian’s men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.  Rank has helped fund a variety of initiatives for the Greyhounds while also attending many Moravian events and sponsoring the Blue & Grey Golf Classic.  Rank has also opened up his restaurants including Starters Riverport opened in April 2006 and Starters Clubhouse Grille opened in June 2008 as well as Starters Pub for Moravian athletic teams as well as visiting schools and other athletic programs around the Lehigh Valley.
