BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College honored its 2010 senior student-athletes at its annual Senior Athletics Awards Banquet Wednesday night in Johnston Hall.  Track and field student-athlete Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) was named the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete while baseball player Chris Morrison (Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata HS) was honored with the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete award.  The Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete awards were presented to field hockey student-athlete Damara Varney (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and men’s basketball player Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS).  The H.T.D. Gillespie Award for outstanding service to Moravian’s athletics program was presented to Gary Martell ’76.
Heim, who was unable to attend the banquet since she will be competing on Thursday at the 2010 ECAC Division III Championships in Springfield, Massachusetts, won the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship in the pole vault with an NCAA Division III all-time indoor record height of 4.16 meters (13 feet, 7 ¾ inches).  It was the fourth straight year Heim, pictured at right, had competed at the indoor National Championships, and her third All-American finish indoors and fifth overall in seven trips to the NCAA meet.  She was the runner-up both indoors and outdoors in 2009.  Heim won the conference title both indoors and outdoors three of the four years during her career, and she captured the 2009 Penn Relays Women’s College Division title.  In addition to having the school records indoors and outdoors in the pole vault, Heim set the school mark in the 400-meter hurdles while finishing as the runner-up at the 2010 Landmark Conference Championship.  Heim has a total of 12 conference titles, four conference runner-up finishes, two ECAC titles and two ECAC runner-up finishes to go along with a fourth, a third, two runner-ups and a first at the national championships.  Heim is currently second in the nation heading into the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College on May 27th-29th.
Morrison, a three-year starting pitcher, helped Moravian to its first Landmark Conference Championship last weekend, the Greyhounds first conference title in 21 years, and an automatic berth into the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament that will be announced Sunday night, the first NCAA appearance for the baseball squad.  Morrison, this week’s Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week, is leading the Greyhounds on the mound this season with a 7-1 record, which ties the school record for victories in a season, with a 2.08 ERA, a shutout, five complete games, 21 walks and 54 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings.  Morrison, pictured at left, has a 15-7 career mark, the second most victories in school history, to go with a 3.01 ERA, 11 complete games, two shutouts, 52 walks and 118 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings of action.  Morrison and his teammates will also find out the 2010 Landmark All-Conference Teams on Monday, May 17th.
Varney, who started all 16 matches last fall for the Greyhounds as a defensive midfielder, was named to the 2009 Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.  Varney, pictured at right, saw action in 46 field hockey matches in her three seasons on the team, starting 33, and she had a goal and two assists.  She played on the Moravian women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams during her career as well, and was named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll three times while achieving Dean’s List accolades each semester.  Varney has a 3.90 grade point average, and she is majoring in nursing.
Weaver led Moravian in scoring this past winter at 12.8 points per game while being named to the Landmark All-Conference Second Team, and he was second on the squad in rebounds at 6.0 per contest.  In his career, Weaver played in 100 games, missing just two contests in four seasons, and he contributed 885 points, 405 rebounds, 117 assists, 97 steals and 17 blocked shots.  Weaver, pictured at left, was named to the 2010 Landmark Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll, and he was a member of the Lehigh Valley Small College Men’s Basketball Team of the Year.  Weaver has a 3.26 grade point average, and he is majoring in criminal law and society with a minor in accounting.
Martell has made many contributions to the Moravian Athletic Department since he arrived on campus as a student in 1970.  A member of the Moravian Hall of Fame Class of 1991, Martell has served as chair of the Hall of Fame Committee for the last 12 years.  Martell has also served as an assistant football coach for the Greyhounds since graduating in 1976.
