BRIENNE SMITH NAMED MORAVIAN COLLEGE HEAD WOMEN’S SOCCER COACH

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Brienne Smith has been named the head coach of the Moravian College women’s soccer team, effective immediately.

“We are excited to have coach Smith join our staff as we move to have each of our soccer programs with a dedicated coach,” said Moravian College Director of Athletics Paul Moyer. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position.  I am confident that Brienne has the ability, knowledge and desire to build upon our strong women’s soccer tradition well into the future.”

Smith, who most recently served as assistant head coach at Tufts (Mass.) University, replaces Eric Lambinus, who became the head women’s soccer coach at NCAA Division I Lehigh University back in February.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Moravian Community, Smith stated. “ This is a great opportunity for me both personally and professionally.  Coach Lambinus as built a consistently successful women's soccer and it is a great privileged to take on this role in hopes to not only pick up where he left off but to continue to build on this winning tradition.

“The proven success of the athletic department as a whole combined with an excellent academic reputation and a beautiful campus located in a historic city made Moravian a place I knew I wanted to be,” Smith continued.  “During my interview, I was able to meet with most of the members of the team.  After our conversation, I was further convinced that the type of student athlete that is attracted to Moravian College is the student athlete that I truly enjoy working with.”

Smith becomes just the fourth women's soccer coach at Moravian as the program is set to begin its 17th season in 2010. The Greyhounds have a 184-91-19 all-time record.

“Getting to know the members of this team along with creating a challenging, competitive, and fun environment will be my highest priority come August,” said Smith.  “As the new leader of this program, I will have high expectations of my players both on and off the playing field. As we pursue our goal of reaching regional and national prominence, we will always represent our college with class and dignity.”

Smith has spent the last nine years at Tufts University, helping the Jumbos post an 82-38-12 record with NCAA Division III Tournament berths in 2002, 2005 and 2007.  She also served as head coach of the U-18 Girls Dynamis United from 2006 until 2008.

Smith is a 2001 graduate of Clark (Mass.) University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in education.  She completed a Master of Science in physical education at Bridgewater State (Mass.) College in 2007.
