MORAVIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM TO HOST WBCA/PINK ZONE ON FEBRUARY 13TH

BETHLEHEM, PA --- The Moravian College women’s basketball team will host its annual Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday February 13, 2010 when the Greyhounds host Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference game.  The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall on the campus of Moravian College.

The WBCA/Pink Zone ™ initiative is a global unified effort for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities, and beyond.  Last year, Moravian raised $5,200 with all proceeds from pledges, raffles, and concessions donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The basketball program is asking that faculty, staff, and students join us in this fight.  In the past, the Moravian College community has been very generous in your support of this event.

Moravian has also partnered with two local schools in this initiative.  Parkland High School and the Catasauqua School District will be selling t-shirts and doing penny wars to help raise money.  These two schools were included in this event due to the passing of Patti Heffner, the mother of Moravian junior forward Amy Heffner.  Patti lost a battle with brain cancer earlier this year and coached at both schools throughout her coaching career.

T-shirts and rally towels will be sold at the game, and raffles will be drawn for prizes, including the pink game ball.  Also at the game, She Salon Day Spa will donate their time and skills to do face painting, nail painting, and hair styling throughout the game. They will be on hand from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.  All proceeds will be donated to cancer research.

The team will also be accepting pledges for each assist the Moravian teams make in each game.  Currently, women’s team is averaging 14 assists.  To make a donation or for more information, please contact assistant coach Sara Steinman at 610-625-7762 or email at steinmans@moravian.edu.

For the third straight season, the women’s team will be wearing pink uniforms, one of the few NCAA Division III schools to wear pink uniforms for the initiative.  Dr. James Frommer, the athletics team physician, and Jessie Coughlin Milner ’99, donated money to purchase these uniforms two years ago.
